Another good session today.
EDIT: I am an idiot. There are 31 days in August! I just posted a huge long report on the month, which I will now post tomorrow! Pace stuff posted all month was also assuming August had only 30 days in it lol.

Ran pretty well again today. So good results even though I couldn't get that many hands in. Friday night drunken maniacs at the table were a bonus as always. I played a 16/10/1.75 today.
I made 2 blunders today. One was just misreading the board on the river (not seeing that it had paired, and shipping my stack in with a flush). Just make sure you double check boards.
Second one was more avoidable even though I didn't lose much. The hand is here.

In the above hand, a dumb nit reg (20/2 and doesn't understand set mining math) limped UTG, a random raised and I reraised with KK. The nit cold called and the random raised again fairly small. I just called here and of course the nit called as well.
I got out on the flop for 2 reasons.
#1 I thought there was a good chance the random had AA.
#2 The nit reg was yet to act and that flop nails his set mining range.
The correct way to play this hand was to shove preflop for these reasons.
#1 Don't fold or get cute with KK preflop to randoms ever. Always ship it in given the chance.
#2 You are freerolling over the nits dead money cuz he never has AA here and will always fold preflop.

Heater? Ask for one and you shall receive it I guess. Results today were outstanding. Reformulation of my game again. I don't think nit mode is optimal. I played a 15/9/2.2 today. Basically how I was playing before the experimenting in the past few weeks with a few wrinkles.
New stuff is Limping 22-66 in EP. Tighter range when ISO'ing over 2+ limpers. Decreased flop aggression. Using overbets more in key spots. Fighting for limped pots a little more.
I don't think I'm going to actually reach 200k hands this month. That is ok though. I have smashed my old record of hands played in a month (125k). I'm still very pleased with the effort this month, especially with many more rough stretches than normal.
I obviously won't reach my exercise goal either, but again, I'm more than happy with the effort this month. The jogging combined with a good diet, which I am always trying to improve on, has been huge for me. I think exercising 2 out of every 3 days, was probably a bit too much anyways. Every other day is fine.

First good results day in quite awhile. Probably uncoincidentally I also played better than I have in some time. Building on what I was talking about yesterday, I played a 13/8/2.5 today and made several great laydowns.
The best was bottom set on 467hh in a limped pot when a shorty fish potted, I raised, and the biggest nit in the world cold called. It got back to the shorty who pushed, and I folded 444. The nit snap called and showed 666. Not an amazingly hard fold in retrospect, but the kind of stuff that saves you a bundle in the long run.

I also did much better with pot control in marginal spots with overpairs and TPTK hands. Losing the bare minimum in several spots in big cooler situations such as AK on A83r, with villain showing 888.
I am running better and actually coolering some people myself and having hands hold up. It makes it a lot easier to play. And I've commented several times before on how much better I play when running good. The continual challenge is to do the same when running bad.
In any case, this 13/8/2ish nittier more passive approach is definitely the way I need to continue approaching the game at these low limits.

Today I played nittier than I have in years, at 12/5/2, and the results were good. I only ran about average, but a more passive preflop approach and fit or fold, with lots of laydowns and pot control postflop, seemed to work. The idea is that they don't fold, so just literally wait for the nuts. So I am going to work with this style some more, altho perhaps not quite so nitty.

Continue with my horrific run of cards. I really don't care anymore though. I hardly even blink anymore when I get 2 outed or coolered. Lost nut flush to str8 flush today. That was a good one lol. I think I've seen it all at this point.
Its just all about playing well through it. Poker is one long waiting game. Big rushes are extremely rare. Making the tough folds during those long stretches where nothing is working for you, means that when you do hit your rush, its all profit, not recovering losses.
Couple things. I need to play better. I am getting caught up trying to fight back against the handful of aggressive regs who all seem to want to start wars with me. Continue to 3bet them a bit lighter than most, but stop calling their 3bets OOP and floating and such. Just fold your 99 or whatever and let them have it. Its not worth the time, when there are so many fish everywhere waiting to hand me their money.
Be patient and just believe people. Give them credit. Don't make hero calls against the fish when they bet full pot. Its never a bluff. I don't care how hard it is to see what they could have possibly hit. They hit it. Fold.

I have now officially played more hands of poker this month, than any month ever. And theres still a 1/3 of the month to go. Excellent. Got started late today. Blew a bunch of time watching the olympics, waiting to see Bolt's 200 meter performance (well worth it tho). So I just played one long session.
It started off poorly like every one it seems this month, with beats and coolers. But then things picked up. I decided to just apply an extremely nitty approach and it seemed to work. It goes against everything I know about how to play this game, but its just the only way to optimally exploit calling stations.
I think a lot of people (including me) end up banging their head against a wall at the lowest limits (especially when running bad), b/c the forums and books all preach aggression, aggression, aggression. Well yes, aggression is the key to beating semi competent players. The take a trip to the casino twice a month middle aged guy who thinks he's good.
It is not the way to beat the total beginners that I play against. They think only about their own hand, and nothing about what I can have. You can't scare them out of pots. You only end up betting their (often weak, but better than yours) hand for them. And basically giving them money, that normally they would have no way to make.
So my new approach is similar to what I wrote the other day, but I will define it better here. I still play as many decent hands as I can. Around 15% VPIP, with a high positional awareness, but a little less raising. Just AQ+ and pairs in EP. Limp the low pairs 22-66. Raise everything else. My range widens as I get closer to the button, and I am opening anything I play, if I'm first in the pot.
Limping behind more often if I'm not first in the pot, with the weaker speculative hands like low pairs and SC's and small suited Aces. I'm never going to ISO over 3+ limpers unless I have a top 10 hand. Over 2 limpers, ISO with a top 15 hand. With one limper ISO with a top 25 hand. If that one limper is a nit reg, add SC's and small pairs to the top 25 ISO range.
On the flop, I'm checking behind with broadway cards and low to mid pairs much more often on missed flops. I am always checking to them when I'm OOP and have missed. Bet folding turns more with TPTK and overpair hands. Checking turns to them most of the time, OOP, with the weaker end of my TPTK and overpair hands. Value betting rivers if they have shown no aggression in the hand.

Played really bad today in my first session. I really have to drill it in my head to stop trying to run over a bunch of droolers. They don't fold anything! I get called by king high routinely, even on the river. I have run extremely bad this month, but I really think I'm spewing a lot still by betting their hands for them. I need to play best hand poker in its purest form.
Keys to toning down the aggression are as follows.
Preflop
Drop the PFR down to 8 or so. There are no metagame principles at play here at all. This means limp 22-66 in EP. Raise your ISO standards, especially with multiple limpers. Just stop ISO'ing with SC's altogether. Also, don't ISO with small pairs anymore. The exception here is when one or two nit regs limp. ISO with your whole range there b/c its free money.
Flop
C/R with sets more when OOP and I'm the preflop caller. CBET less, especially when OOP. Again the exception is nit regs. CBET them the vast majority of the time, IP or OOP, except for highly textured coordinated flops, that miss me. Raise donk bets from time to time, but never do it with total air.
Turn
Double barrel OOP only with an overpair, set, trips or a made hand. Do not double barrel with TPTK hands unless villains stack is a PSB. Double barrel IP a bit more liberally with TPTK type hands, but never against nit regs. Take the free card with a draw. You MUST fold to turn aggression more with TPTK and overpair hands. This is by far the biggest area of spew in my game.
River
Value bet, value bet, value bet.

Good day today. Games were better than normal cuz its a weekend. Not that they ever aren't good at the limits I play. Playing well lately though, which is of course so much easier to do when you are running decent.
Really focusing on key hands more. No rash decisions. Also, making sure I'm not firing Cbets into stations as much, especially OOP. And pot controlling more with TPTK type hands.
Also, raising a little less preflop with big pairs is better. I think I was scaring away too much action before. It is situational though. On a crazy night like a Saturday, I was still getting 4 callers with a 6bb PFR. So go back to 8bb during those times.
All in all, just patience and more patience is what is needed to best exploit really bad players.

Heading out tonight, so only had time for one big session. I have played more hands than I did in the entire month of July at the midway point of August. And I am basically still on pace for 200k hands played total. So even though, the results have been lacking thus far, my effort has been the best its ever been.

Today was yet another unreal day. I had to stop at one point to avoid going on tilt. I think of the 13 days so far this month, I have run horribly bad for 10 of them. I've never seen anything like this. Nothing even close to this through four years.
My winrate this month is about 35% lower than what its been for over 200k previous hands in the same game. This is the most insane stat of them all: Through 83k hands this month, KK is a losing hand for me. Its hard to imagine that even being possible.
On a different note, I did play the most insane hand I have ever played today. I have never lost with quads, but I can now say, I have beaten someone with quads. I think thats like my 12th Royal alltime. I actually had one yesterday also, which I didn't post. I run good at getting them obv lol

Ran pretty horrific today. This month has just been unreal. I was down 2 buyins in the second session before I could even get all the tables up lol. KK runs into AA aipf. Then literally 30 seconds later, same thing cept I have the AA this time. K on the flop though. gg me. Lost a deepstacked pot later on with AA to a reg's KK, all in on turn, king riv lol.
I eventually found me some donkies tho and made some money. I think I'm just getting numb to the beats by now. You play this many hands each day, you see the sickest stuff possible on a regular basis. There is no individual hand that matters. There is no individual session that matters. My PT database for the month and year is all that matters.

Achieving goals takes consistent effort. That is something that I struggle with a lot. Everybody gets a big initial surge of motivation when you lay out some grand plans. Its carrying through with them after that initial surge, and when the going gets tough, that separates people.
I am not giving it my best effort lately. But I am continuing to at least give myself a chance at these goals, by doing something, however small, each day. This is good, and a sign of improvement.
Just to add on this blog I found an interesting piece on someone else's blog that directly relates to what I just wrote above.
Quoted from an article on stevepavlina.com:
"Passion is nonessential for success.
Which is better though: passion or self-discipline? I’ll argue that self-discipline is the better fuel.
Like any emotional state, passion waxes and wanes. Sometimes you’re highly motivated. Sometimes you aren’t. Passion has its peaks and valleys, so if you base your actions on your level of passion, your results will depend on your emotions. Feeling passionate? Great actions, great results. Feeling dispassionate? Weak actions, mediocre results.
Using passion as your only fuel will no more assure you of success than being in love will ensure a successful long-term relationship.
Self-discipline is far more important than passion, especially in business. In fact, if you develop the quality of self-discipline to a high degree, it will put passion to shame.
Self-discipline allows you take action and therefore get results no matter what your emotional state. Where passion is erratic, self-discipline provides steadiness and stability. And because your emotions aren’t in the way, your decisions are more likely to succeed because they’ll be made from a state of disciplined intellect rather than from emotional peaks and valleys.
Which would you bet on if your life depended on it?
If you wereto undergo open heart surgery, would you want a disciplined, dispassionate surgeon or an undisciplined, passionate one?
If you were being tried for murder, would you want a disciplined, dispassionate defense team or a an undisciplined, passionate one?
If you were flying in the Space Shuttle, would you want the ground controllers to be disciplined and dispassionate or undisciplined and passionate?
Passion is great, but it’s icing. It needs self-discipline to back it up.
Self-discipline is quieter though. Passion gets more attention these days becuase it makes more noise."

I had problems motivating myself to play today. Just played one session where I ran about average. I think the biggest demotivating factor is the low limits I play. It frustrates me b/c I know I'm a solid winner at much higher limits. And I feel like I am wasting my time with all this grinding at the lowest stakes.
But I did this to myself. Months and months of slacking off means a lot of cashouts and a dwindling bankroll. I have to work very hard each day to get ahead. But the future payoff is well worth it.
I am learning how to work hard still. It is definitely not something that comes natural to me. Especially when there is no one to answer to but myself. Its like pulling teeth some days.
But as long as I do SOMETHING each day its ok. Today was a slight misstep. But this month has been pretty good so far. I am right on pace for 200k hands after 30% of the month. This is an improvement on last month (which was my best month of the year). I was already a couple days into my first hiatus by this point in July.
I can't build Rome today or tomorrow, but as long as I keep improving and don't get down on myself, its gonna work out.

This is just twilight zone stuff now. Yet another day where I was forced to stop early b/c I am just getting fucked right up the ass on every single hand.
I have a high threshold before tilt comes on and I have more motivation to play than ever right now. It takes a lot to get me to quit, but I had to again today. I don't even know what to think anymore. This is to the point of unbelievability.
This downswing now stretches 53k hands. I think the longest I have ever had previously is 30k.
I really don't like using programs like PokerEv but I just had to run this downswing through it. The last day where my equity adjusted winnings was below my actual winnings was July 21st! LOL?
I know I took several days off but in actual days played that represents 8 in a row where my equity adjusted winnings were above my actual winnings, with many of those days equity being way way above winnings. I am down an astonishing 16.5 buyins in equity since July 22.
Can't remember who wrote this. I think it was Gigabet
I thought I knew how true this was from previous downswings. How wrong I was! It gets worse!
This game is completely fucked. But I will try again tomorrow.

Most hands ever played in one day. Beat the old record by a few hundred I think. Ran unbelievably bad for the first 5k. Ran average for the last 7k. Today was a sick attempt to break this downswing through brute force.
I briefly changed my game to nit style today b/c these downswings fuck with your confidence so badly. That is bad. Don't do it again. I need to push marginal edges as well as the big ones, always.
Another thought I had today was this. I have played around 1.5 million hands lifetime stretching over several years. This is definitely the worst downswing I have ever faced now. It looks like ones this long are pretty rare. Just get through it. You probably won't see one like this again for a long time.

I ran very bad all day today. This game really is unbelievable at times. After 3 or 4 days in a row of this now, there was no mercy given right up until the end. One of the last hands I played tonight, I flop a set of deuces, get it all in on the flop, villains KK hits the 2 outer on the river lol. It was like that all day and for nearly 30k hands now.
I have no idea when it is going to end. Mathematically, this can't last forever one would think lol. But I'm in good spirits. And I still booked a small win on the day. I have never had a losing day at these limits still which is pretty unbelievable considering how many sessions that spans.

Didn't feel well today at all. My sleep last night really sucked. So I was glad to get in as many hands as I did. Also said no tonight to going out drinking all night with my brother and friends. Hard, but the right decision. The only way I'm gonna be successful is if, when I say I'm going to do something, I do it!
I ran like complete shit all day. But I just laughed it off. I did very well with that today. I finally made some money at the very end when AA and stuff finally held against friday night morons.
Maybe its a sign I am breaking out of this downswing. I think it lasted over 20k hands. Seen em many times before. Just gotta laugh more when it happens. It really doesn't matter. I always win at poker in the end.

July Review/August Goals
Well. I didn't manage to play another hand of poker for the rest of July, which means that I played 94k hands this month. This is woefully short of my goal of 200k hands. 94k is significantly above my average for the year, but it is still very disappointing to fall that short of my goal.
From a review of my July posts, it seems pretty obvious where the problem lies. I took 18 days off this month! Which means that I only played on 13 of the 31 days in the month. This is just ridiculous.
My play is incredibly streaky. If I get playing it snowballs and I will want to play each day. If I take just one day off, it turns into another and it becomes harder and harder for me to even think about playing. This has to stop.
Usually the stretches of nonplay start with getting smashed and using the hangover as an excuse to not play. Though I don't drink much it always starts my streak of nonplay. Solution? Don't drink.
Lastly, when downswings happen I need to handle them better. 1,2,3,4 outers are completely normal and I have to accept that. They will always happen as long as I play this game.
I need to get out more and go for a bike ride when the cards are killing me. More exercise in general will help me deal with this better.
So on to my goals for August.
I expect to meet all of these goals. This isn't a hard life I have. None of these things are overly difficult to me. August has to be a breakthrough month for me.
