Why You're Not Winning at Poker Yet (Brutal Truth)

Why You're Not Winning at Poker Yet

This article was written by blackrain79.com contributor Fran Ferlan.

You’ve read a bunch of poker strategy articles online, you’ve watched hours worth of Youtube poker tutorials, you’ve even printed and memorized the preflop charts.

You know the basics of the tight and aggressive poker strategy, and you don’t play suited junk anymore, but somehow, you’re still not making bank. Sound familiar?

So what gives? There must be something else you’re missing, right?

This article will give you 5 reasons you’re still not making money playing poker, and what you can do about it. And no, it’s not because you’re not using solvers.

Some of the answers might be a hard pill to swallow, but I promise they’re good for you. Let’s dive right in.

1. You Don’t Study Poker As Much As You Should

Learning the winning poker strategy is not overly difficult, even if you are a total beginner.

Just play tight, play in position, and value bet your hands relentlessly. Sounds simple enough, right?

But here’s the thing.

Learning the fundamentals of the winning poker strategy is only the beginning of your development as a winning poker player, not the end.

You can’t expect to read a few articles and memorize a few charts and just start printing money.

Transitioning from a totally clueless fish into a breakeven player, say, isn’t that complicated, but to go from a breakeven player to absolutely crushing the game takes a lot more time and effort.

So you’ve read a couple of articles, maybe a book or two. Guess what? So did everyone else.

By the way, if you just want to learn my simple no BS system for exactly what hands to play, when to bet, raise and bluff, I cover this in extensive detail in my brand new training program, Play Fearless Poker.

Memorize the charts. Stop guessing. Start winning.

My new Play Fearless Poker training program includes 12+ hours of advanced poker lessons, 100+ step by step example hands and "cheat sheets" below every single video.

Poker is More Competitive These Days

Poker is a lot more competitive nowadays than it was 10 years ago. The secrets of the trade known only to the world class professionals are common knowledge today.

It doesn’t mean the game can’t still be beaten, though. It just means it’s not a walk in the park it used to be.

Everybody loves playing poker. Very few people actually love studying poker.

Because studying poker isn’t sexy. It’s not exciting, and it can feel like a major grind.

It’s something you know you should be doing, but when it comes the time to actually do it, you’d rather do pretty much anything else.

One of the reasons studying is such a bummer is the fact that it actually forces you to take a good look at your skills (or lack thereof) and figure out exactly where your game might be lacking.

When you take a closer look, you realize how little you know.

You might be familiar with all the lingo, but being familiar with something and actually understanding it are not the same thing.

As Albert Einstein famously said:

"If you can’t explain it to a six year old, you don’t understand it yourself."

It’s also hard to assess leaks in your own game.

If you were able to recognize the mistakes in your own game, you wouldn’t be making those mistakes in the first place. It’s easy to see problems in other players, but very difficult to do so with your own game.

This is why an ounce of humility can go a long way.

Everyone has leaks in their game.

If you don’t have the results you’re hoping for yet, chances are you’d benefit from brushing up on your poker knowledge. There’s always something new to learn.

I have already written the complete guide on both the best poker training sites to study poker and the best poker software tools to improve your poker game as well.

2. You Treat Poker Like an Amateur

If you treat it like an amateur, you’re going to get amateur results. Now, let’s get one thing straight right off the bat. Being an amateur is not a bad thing.

By definition, an amateur is a person who engages in an activity for the activity’s sake, and not as a source of income.

They are often pretty easy to stop at the poker table because they tend to use a lot of bad poker strategies, as Nathan discussed in a recent video.

Now, not everyone wants to be a professional poker player, no matter how enticing the prospect might seem at a first glance.

In fact, a vast majority of people would be better off keeping their day job. This doesn’t mean you can’t make good money playing poker even as an amateur.

It just goes to show that in order to achieve extraordinary results, you need to put in an extraordinary effort.

I mean, even making $50 a day from poker is by no means a walk in the park anymore.

And for most people, putting extraordinary effort into a card game (especially for small profits like this) isn’t possible or practical.

However though, if you’ve ever played poker, you must have imagined what it would be like to be a full time pro, set your own hours, travel the world, and enjoy the life of luxury.

What you didn’t imagine was sitting in a dark room in front of a computer screen for hours and days on end, studying math and staring at charts, staying in on weekends, losing hundreds and thousands of dollars due to standard variance.

It’s not all glitz and glamour. It’s a job. Only you’re not guaranteed a paycheck at the end of the month.

Very few people can make a living playing cards, and when you take a closer look, it’s not something most people would want to do in the first place. That doesn’t mean you can’t make money playing poker, though.

It just means playing a couple of hours over the weekend with a beer in hand is probably not going to cut it. At the end of the day, the amount of money you make is proportional to the amount of effort you put in.

This is why 70% of people lose at poker and only a small handful make most of the big profits. Some people simply want it much more than others.

3. You’re Not As Good a Poker Player As You Think

Poker is deceptively simple. It only takes an hour to learn how to play, and not much longer to learn a successful winning strategy.

But there’s a long way to go from not making glaringly obvious mistakes and being an expert.

As a general rule, people tend to overestimate their abilities. There is usually a huge gap between people’s self-reported understanding of the subject and their actual understanding of the subject.

In psychology, this is called the Dunning-Kruger effect. And poker players are especially guilty of this. That’s because unlike other endeavours, it’s difficult to accurately assess your skill level.

Over the long run, we measure our success or failure with the dollar amount won or lost. This is an unreliable metric, but at the end of the day, that’s what counts.

Of course, there is variance to account for. How much you win or lose over a certain sample size is not entirely up to you.

But this is exactly where the problem lies. It’s much easier to ascribe your bad results to negative variance than the underlying flaws in your game.

The problem with blaming variance is also not accounting for all the times you’re actually running well.

It’s easy to spot the situations where you lose to a suckout three times in a row, or when you’re card dead for hours on end.

It’s much more difficult to spot, or even admit, that you got lucky by coolering your opponents. Variance goes both ways. You have to take the bad with the good.

Now, it’s entirely possible to run like crap for a long time. Many people are surprised to learn that even world class pros sometimes run bad in poker for months.

And it is absolutely brutal, I can tell you from experience.

But the cards you’re dealt are only a part of the equation. There are going to be some losing days, guaranteed. The point is, you need to make sure you lose no more than absolutely necessary.

The other part of the equation is making sure you make as much money as possible when you actually run well.

Here’s the thing:

If you lose a lot when cards aren’t falling your way, and win a little when you’re on a heater, guess what? Variance is not to blame for your bad results.

So instead of ruminating about your All-in Equity Adjusted graphs, take a moment to reflect if there is some part of your game that might be improved upon.

By the way, I discuss this in much more detail in my new Elite Poker University training.

4. You Tilt Away Your Profit

Having a solid grasp of a fundamental winning poker strategy is only a part of the equation.

The far more difficult part is coming to terms with periods when the winning strategy isn’t producing the results you’re hoping for.

Everyone can play well when the deck keeps hitting them in the face. It’s an entirely different story when you do everything right and seemingly get punished for it.

You start getting agitated, you begin playing hands you shouldn’t be playing, getting involved in marginal spots you’re better off avoiding, which ends up costing you even more money.

Then you bemoan your luck and blame variance. Some people go so far as to believe every poker site is rigged against them.

While variance does play a part in bad results, it’s not the whole story, and many players use it as an excuse. If you experience a couple of suckouts in a row, there’s really not much you can do about it.

But if those suckouts cause you to start open-raising marginal hands, or calling down your opponents too wide in order to get even, the subsequent losses you incur can’t be blamed on variance, or other players, or the dealer, or the poker gods.

It’s up to you to keep your emotions in check. This is something that Nathan discusses at length in The Micro Stakes Playbook.

If you can’t do that, you’re better off taking a break. There’s no shame in walking away. Poker can be unbelievably punishing, and it’s emotionally and mentally draining even at the best of times.

So if you’re emotionally compromised to the point it affects your decision making, quit and live to fight another day. The games will always be there tomorrow.

On the other hand, simply quitting everytime something bad happens is hardly an optimal long-term solution.

In order to put in more volume, which is the only way to assess your true results, you will need to develop a thicker skin.

This means you need to get to the root cause of your tilting problems. What is it exactly that sets you off? Is it the money lost? Is it the perceived injustice? Do you just hate losing?

Whatever the case might be, taking some time to reflect on these issues is just as important as knowing which hands to 3-bet light with, or when to check-raise the turn as a bluff.

For some reason, the whole mental game aspect is often overlooked in the poker world. One of the reasons might be that people tend to look for quick fixes and easy solutions.

It’s a lot easier to assume you suck at poker because you don't know how to play Ace-King in 3-bet pots than it is to admit you have anger management issues.

But here’s the thing:

Everyone playing poker today can learn how to play Ace-King in 3-bet pots. Very few people are willing and able to work on the psychological issues lurking beneath the surface.

If you take time for some honest self-assessment, you’ll be way ahead of the curve not just at the poker table, but in life in general.

For much more on this by the way see my massive guide to using a Stoic philosophy to win more in poker.

5. You’re Focused On The Results Rather Than The Process

Making money is how we measure our success in poker. However, the amount of money won is an unreliable metric.

For most people, poker is a hobby. And like other hobbies, it costs money.

Even if you are a breakeven poker player, you’re actually way ahead of the curve, as most people actually lose money in the long term.

But if you want to be a decent winning player over the long term, you need to forget about the money for a second.

You need to quit daydreaming about how you are going to make $5000 a month playing poker.

This may seem like a paradox, but hear me out. If you’re in it for the prospect of making an easy buck, chances are you’ll end up poorer for your efforts.

There’s a ton of content these days about making money online, and poker is just one of many. What they all have in common is they treat money as the end goal, rather than means to an end.

They’re all focused on how to make an x amount of money in a short amount of time, preferably without any skill, expertise, or effort.

What people fail to realize is the only way to actually make money is to provide valuable goods or services. There’s really nothing more to it.

So where does poker fit into the equation?

Well, it doesn’t. Poker is a zero-sum game, which means one person’s gain is another person’s loss (minus the rake, of course).

There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, as there are other factors that provide the added value (i.e. the entertainment aspect).

Still, if having fun is not your primary motivation, and making money is, you’ll need to be more skilled than the competition you’re up against.

And the only way to do so is focus on your improvement as a poker player, rather than monetary gains. Money is the byproduct of effort. If you put in the work, the money will take care of itself eventually.

The most successful poker players aren’t the ones that are motivated by the prospect of becoming filthy rich, but the ones that are the most passionate about the game itself.

They don’t mind studying. They don’t mind the grind.

They don’t mind losing money to endless suckouts and coolers (well, they do, but far less so than most of us). They want to improve, because improvement is its own reward.

And luckily, there are more ways than ever these days to quickly improve your poker game.

Why You're Not Winning at Poker (Summary)

It takes a lot more to succeed in poker than memorizing a few charts.

Poker is an incredibly competitive endeavour, especially today with the abundance of information readily available to anyone interested.

For example, there are lots of good advanced poker training programs available these days for anyone who is ready to take the game seriously.

So to get ahead of the competition, you need to keep improving your knowledge base beyond the basic “just play tight” approach.

You can apply the 80:20 rule, where you play poker 80% of the time, and study 20%. As you develop your game further, you can play more and study less.

Designating the time to study is also one of the ways to approach poker in a more business oriented way.

If you just play whenever you feel like it, without a plan and a goal in mind, your results are going to be lackluster at best. If you want to make money like the pros do, act like one.

Reflecting on how much, or how little effort you actually put in your game can highlight why you have the results you do. Chances are, you’re overestimating your abilities.

There’s a lot more to winning poker than knowing which cards to play in which position.

How you deal with the periods when the tried and true strategy isn’t producing the results you’re hoping for is what separates the pros from the amateurs.

Handling these obstacles is also a skill, and is just as important as the technical game knowledge.

Finally, the best way to improve your poker results is, paradoxically, not worrying about them in the first place.

What you should focus on instead is your improvement as a poker player, be it from the technical or mental game aspect.

Take a tiny step forward each day, and forget about the money for a second. Money will take care of itself eventually.

Why You're Not Winning at Poker Yet

What is a Good Poker Winning Percentage? (2026)

What is a Good Poker Winning Percentage?
People often ask me what is a good poker winning percentage. This refers to the percentage of the time you play poker where you can expect to walk away from the tables with a profit.

Or to "book a win" as some might say.

A good poker winning percentage at the micro stakes games like NL2 and NL5 can be as high as 90%. But once you get to higher stakes like NL25 and NL50 your winning percentage will be much lower at around 60%. Winning high stakes poker players may only book a win a little over 50% of the time.

And this is because, as you probably know, losing sometimes is inevitable in poker. No matter how good you are at poker, some days there just isn't anything you can do to win.

They have the higher flush, the better pair, they hit that miracle river card yet again. I am sure you know the drill!

So how often can you expect to book a win though when you play poker? What is a good poker winning percentage these days?

I am going to cover it all in this article, stake by stake. And then I will also discuss live poker winning percentages as well.

By the way, if you're new to poker and you just want to learn my simple system for exactly what hands to play, grab my free poker cheat sheet.

Memorize the charts. Stop guessing. Start winning.

NL2 Good Poker Winning Percentage

NL2 refers to the 1cent/2cent blind games online. These are the easiest online poker games to beat because it is the very lowest stake.

Therefore, you will often encounter complete beginners who are playing online for the first time. And sometimes they barely know the rules of the game.

Example of an extremely bad poker player at NL2:

Even the so called "regulars" are largely very new to poker and have massive glaring leaks in their game in so many areas.

So you can maintain a very high winrate in these games which ultimately means that you will have a very high winning percentage as well.

In NL2 a good poker winning percentage is 90%.

So what this means is that one of the very best players in this game can expect to walk away from the tables with a profit about 9 out of 10 times they play.

When I used to produce some of the highest winrates ever recorded in this game many years ago, I would actually almost never have a losing day. Maybe 2 or 3 losing days a year.

In other words my winning percentage at NL2 was something like 99%. People often ask me why I played so many hands at these low stakes.

Well, poker is a pretty fun game when you virtually never lose!

By the way, if you just want to learn my simple no BS system for exactly what hands to play, when to bet, raise and bluff, I cover this all in my brand new training program, Play Fearless Poker.

NL5 Good Winning Percentage

At NL5, which is the 2cent/5cent blind games, the winrates drop sharply though. As I have discussed before, the biggest relative skill difference in all of online poker exists between NL2 and NL5.

And the reason why is because NL2 is kind of like Kindergarten. It is the beginner's game. NL5 is for people who actually have some clue what they are doing though. They have "graduated" on up to it after all.

So there tends to be far less total beginners and far less totally clueless recreational players and weekend drunks.

This means much lower winrates and much lower winning percentages. Now don't worry though as you will notice that I used the word "relative" above.

With a solid understanding of the basics anyone can still beat NL5 pretty easily these days. And anyone who plays any kind of real higher stakes would quite simply laugh at anyone calling NL5 a hard game to beat.

In NL5 the very best players can expect to have a poker winning percentage of around 70%.

NL10 Good Winning Percentage

By NL10 (5cent/10cent blind game) the opposition gets a little bit better once again. Now most people have graduated past two levels.

So the regulars have a few more tricks up their sleeve. They are able to read hands a little bit better and they are starting to understand and think about poker in terms of ranges instead of individual hands.

There is also typically quite a bit more aggression both preflop and postflop which makes it harder to isolate the fish and run over the weaker regs.

The very best NL10 players can expect to have a session winning percentage of around 65%.

In other words, they will book a win 2 out of every 3 sessions they play. Still not too bad.

NL25 Good Winning Percentage

Once again there is another skill jump once you make it to the NL25 or 10cent/25cent blind game. This is the first level of online poker where you can realistically make a considerable amount of money like $1000 a month.

Therefore, you start to see some of the first pros at this stake. And that means that they actively study the game and are very serious about winning.

They are not only thinking about poker in terms of ranges now but also about how to balances their ranges and possibly exploit you as well.

This is still the micros though, so most players have many glaring weaknesses in their game even at NL25. But your win ratio will continue to drop nonetheless.

The very best NL25 players in the world can expect to have a poker session winning percentage of around 60%.

NL50+ Good Winning Percentage

At NL50 and higher the drop in winning percentage becomes less and less.

This is the because the impact of the rake diminishes and the very best players will be able to beat these games online for somewhere around 4-6bb/100 over the long term.

This means that they will have a poker session winning percentage once again approaching something like 60%.

With these numbers though, you can probably see just how swingy the life of a professional poker player (or semi-pro) will be at these limits. They are only booking a win a little greater than a coinflip.

Now of course there are other things like rakeback and bonuses that can help prop up that winrate and turn more sessions into winning ones.

But the bottom line is that it does become more difficult from a psychological perspective as you move up in online poker because even the very best players will have more losing days.

This is something that I discuss in greater detail by the way in the "going pro" sections of my latest poker book, The Micro Stakes Playbook.

Downswings and Variance Can Change Everything in Poker

But I hope the point remains clear nonetheless. It is only at the very lowest stakes online that you should realistically expect to walk away from the poker tables with a profit on most days.

Once you get to higher stakes the players improve considerably and the idea of losing something like 5 or 10 sessions in a row is a completely normal occurrence.

In fact, this can happen at lower stakes as well. Many people drastically under-estimate the impact of variance in this game. All the of the numbers that I listed throughout this article are just averages.

As I discuss in my latest video, I have had several downswings during my poker career which made me quit the game completely (at least for awhile).

It does not mean that you will always win X% of the time. Sometimes you can hit a bad downswing and have trouble booking a single winning session for weeks on end.

You need to be prepared for this no matter what stakes you are playing.

By the way, I discuss this in much more detail in my new Elite Poker University training.

Good Live Poker Win Ratio

Now I am definitely not a huge live poker expert but having played in my fair share of $1/$2 and $2/$5 games around the world before, I know that the action is typically pretty loose and the skill level is often comparable to NL2 online or a soft NL5 game.

Therefore, I think one of the very best low stakes live poker players could realistically expect to walk away a winner as much as 80% of the time.

Disclaimer!

Now please note though that throughout this article I have only been talking about the very biggest winners as I have mentioned several times.

So the very biggest winners in live poker (which is about 5-10% of the player pool), will have a poker session win ratio of 80%.

Daniel Negreanu actually mentions this in his new advanced poker course. He talks about the importance of maximizing your live poker win-rate so that you win as often as possible.

However, if you are only a slightly above breakeven player over the long run (which is a much larger segment of the player pool), then your live poker win ratio will be nowhere close to 80%. It might be as little as 55% or 60%.

And of course if you aren't a long term winning poker player yet (this is the majority of the player pool), then your session winning percentage will be below 50%.

Check out my guide to playing $1/$2 live in a casino for a living for more.

Final Thoughts

I hope that this article helps some of you guys get a better idea of what a good poker winning percentage is these days in both online poker and live poker.

To be honest I get emails about this kind of thing all the time and that is why I decided to write this article and throw a bunch of numbers out there.

Now sure, you can improve your odds of achieving (or even surpassing) these poker winning percentages, by studying a good advanced poker training program.

But when you really think about it, focusing heavily these numbers is still pretty silly overall.

The reason why is because poker just isn't a game where you can plan out exactly how much you are going to earn and when you will get it like in a regular job with a fixed salary.

Poker in reality is a never-ending series of ups and downs even if you are a pro. You simply cannot control your short term results. They will always be all over the place.

Your long term poker winnings on the other hand is something that you can control. But even still that will depend heavily on your skill level, work ethic, discipline and emotional control among other things.

This is why I always suggest that you simply focus on improving your game and consistently making good decisions at the poker table. If you do this, then the results will come in time.

Lastly, if you want to know how to start consistently making $1000+ per month from low stakes poker, make sure you grab a copy of my free poker cheat sheet.

Good Poker Win Rate For Small Stakes (2026 Update)

Good poker win rate
I get asked about what is a good poker win rate perhaps more than any other topic. That or "how many hours do I need to play to make $50 or $100 a day?"

They usually come from people who are new to online poker. And believe me I get it, people want to know how much money they can potentially make by playing poker.

Unfortunately it isn't always quite so simple in poker though.

However, in this article I am going to give you the answers about what is a good poker win rate in small stakes games these days.

By the way, if you are brand new to poker and you simply want a basic strategy to start winning fast, just grab a copy of my free poker cheat sheet.

Alright, let's jump into it!

What is a Good Poker Win Rate?

First let me give you the short answer:

A good poker win rate is anything above 0bb/100. This is because most people lose at poker in the long run. However, in small stakes games like NL2, NL5, NL10, NL25 and NL50 a good poker win rate can vary from 3bb/100 to 30bb/100.

Now let's talk about what a good poker win rate is for the very biggest winners because I think that is what people want to know.

In my opinion the top 5% of the entire player pool are the ones who are the long term big winners. These are the guys who are winning the highest possible amounts.

These are also typically the ones who are professional poker players. So just to be clear, that is who I am talking about below.

By the way, if you just want the no BS guide on exactly how to win at poker these days, I cover this in extensive detail in my BlackRain79 Elite Poker University.

Game Selection, Table Count and Tilt Contol - Biggest Impact On Your Poker Win Rate

So I will be assuming that they are religiously game selecting (both table selection and seat selection). Elite players tend to always be doing this anyways.

And of course, they are much more likely to be using a high quality poker HUD than amateurs.

Now of course the big thing with game selection is that when you are playing 18 tables at once you simply do not have anywhere near as much time to pay attention to it as someone who is 4 tabling for instance.

The same goes for the quality of your actual poker decisions. This will drastically affect your potential win rate. So I will break down the win rates below into three different volume categories.

I am also assuming throughout this article that these are the players who are very strong mentally. It is just a simple fact that most people will crack under the pressure when the going gets tough in poker.

This is one of the absolute biggest differences between that small group of elite winners in poker and everybody else.

In fact, this is something I discuss in my latest video: 5 Things You Will NEVER See Good Poker Players Do

Never miss my new poker videos, join 150,000+ who are already subscribed.

Lastly, I will also be assuming that they are studying all of the latest advanced poker strategy these days, which is something elite winning players tend to always be doing do anyways.

Because the game of poker is always changing, and therefore if you aren't willing to stay on top of the latest high level poker theory, you will simply get left behind.

And finally, what follows below is just my opinion from playing at all levels of the micros and small stakes games as a professional for many, many years.

If you fail to achieve these numbers (or have already surpassed them) please don't send me hate mail!

What is a BB/100 Poker Win Rate?

Actually one last thing before I get to the numbers though just so we are all on the same page here. What exactly is a bb/100 poker win rate?

Well, in online poker we measure our success (win rate) in terms of how many big blinds you win for every 100 poker hands you play.

So this is why we call it bb/100. You can simply use a program like PokerTracker to easily get your own online poker winrate in bb/100.

This is different from a live poker game in a casino by the way where your winrate is typically measured in terms of how many big blinds you win per hour.

One last quick note, here is what I mean by NL2, NL5 and so on.
  • NL2 (also known as 2NL) = 1 cent / 2 cent blinds
  • NL5 (also known as 5NL) = 2 cent / 5 cent blinds
  • NL10 (also known as 10NL) = 5 cent /10 cent blinds

What Are These Poker Winrates Based On?

Now, please keep in mind that I have some of the highest winrates ever posted in these games and that is what these numbers are based on.

Many people keep sharing these poker winrates that I listed above online though and taking them wildly out of context.

In my experience, less than 2% of all poker players will even come close to beating these games for these winrates.

In fact, the vast majority of winning poker players will be in the 1bb/100 to 3bb/100 range, which is still very good (more on that below).

And like I mentioned off the top, the vast majority of people will actually lose at poker in the long run anyways (i.e. a negative winrate).

But people always ask me "what is possible."

So the winrates above are "what is possible" for the absolute best small stakes poker players in the world, who are utilizing exceptional game selection, have excellent tilt control, and are using the proven optimal winning strategies for these games.

My Poker Winrates (Highest of All Time?)

If you have been following my poker blog for awhile, then you know that I arguably have some of the highest winrates of all time in many of these games, considerably more than what I posted above.

For example, my winrate at NL2 was nearly 30bb/100!

And I also achieved this winrate while mass multi-tabling by the way (20+ tables at a time) which makes it even crazier. All my winrates are posted here by the way.

But you must keep in mind that I achieved many of those winrates 10+ years ago when poker was considerably easier to beat (a lot more bad players).

I am also a 10+ year pro and I have written several books on these games, so I understand the absolute optimal strategy to crush these games.

So, please keep in mind that the numbers that I posted above reflect what is possible for the best players in today's games.

Many of the totally insane winrates that I achieved in the past in these small stakes games, simply are not possible anymore.

By the way, if you just want to learn my simple no BS system for exactly what hands to play, when to bet, raise and bluff, I cover this all in my brand new training program, Play Fearless Poker.

Memorize the charts. Stop guessing. Start winning.

My new Play Fearless Poker training program includes 12+ hours of advanced poker lessons, 100+ step by step example hands and "cheat sheets" below every single video.

Poker Hourly Rate

You might be curious about what this means in terms of how much you make per hour at the poker tables though.

So if you want to break it down even further into your poker hourly rate, then you will need to figure out how many hands per hour you play.

For instance, if you are able to play 1000 hands per hour, with a winrate of 10bb/100 at NL25, then your poker hourly rate would be $25 per hour.

The big blind at NL25 is 25 cents.

1000 hands at 10bb/100 = $25

I think you will want to make sure that you are a solid winning player playing at least these stakes, before you even consider going semi-pro or pro by the way.

This is something that I discuss in a lot more detail in my latest book.

Keep in mind that all of these numbers are pre-rakeback and pre-bonuses as well. This can add up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars more per month especially for high volume players at NL25 and higher.

Also, many professional poker players like myself make considerably more in sponsorships, endorsements and other "off the table" earnings these days as well.

This may also include offering personal coaching, book deals, making training videos, streaming and staking which is something that a lot of poker pros do these days as well.

So configuring your poker hourly rate (especially if you are a poker pro) is not as easy these days. But I would personally suggest aiming for a bare minimum of $100 per hour.

My Free Poker Cheat Sheet Teaches You How to Make $2000+ Per Month From Poker

Are you struggling to beat the low stakes poker games? Do you want a simple step by step guide to show you exactly how to start winning consistently right now?
good poker winrates for zoom
That is why I recently wrote this free little 50 page no BS guide to teach you exactly how to start crushing these games right now.

You will learn the step by step strategies that I personally use as a 10+ year poker pro to make $2000 (or more) per month playing poker.

This includes exactly what hands (memorize the charts) to play and when to bet, raise and bluff!

Enter your details below and I will send my free poker cheat sheet to your email right now.

What is a Good Zoom Poker Win Rate?

What about a Zoom poker win rate though? A lot of people play fast fold poker games like Zoom, Snap, Fast Forward and so on these days.

This is why I wrote the #1 Zoom poker strategy guide available these days online.

Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news but your Zoom poker win rate will not be as high as above. You will need to lower the win rates above by several big blinds at least if you play Zoom.

And the reason why is because in Zoom poker games you cannot table select. You also cannot seat select. This will heavily impact your ability to get on the most profitable tables and on the left of the fish.

By the way, in case you were wondering, yes, I do use quite a few poker tools and software when playing Zoom in particular to help me still find the fish and keep track of all my opponents.

For the complete list of all the poker software and tools I use at the poker tables, click here.

However, let me be clear that all is not lost if you play these Zoom games! The main benefit of Zoom is the ability to put in huge amounts of volume and also the convenience of sitting down and playing poker right away.

These two factors alone can often help mitigate a lower Zoom poker win rate so that you actually make more money in the end. And that of course is all that really matters.

Can You Make a Living Playing Small Stakes Poker? ($2000+ Per Month)

Something that people also often ask me is if you can make a living in small stakes games these days. And I will just say that that will be a bare minimum of $2000 per month.

Well, honestly it is not going to be easy if you play super low stakes like NL2, NL5 or even NL10. Or say, $10 or less buyin tournaments.

In fact playing super low stakes like this is one of my biggest regrets in my professional poker career.

In fact: If I Started Poker Again, I'd Do These 9 Things

Never miss my new poker videos, join 150,000+ who are already subscribed.

The bottom line though is this.

Most people in low stakes games will not be able to make $2000+ per month unless they have one of the elite winrates listed above.

You will also need to be multi-tabling, game selecting and have good tilt control.

However, if you are playing at stakes of NL25, NL50 or NL100 online ($1/$2 or $2/$5 live), then it is certainly possible to make 2k per month playing poker.

And that is because there is a lot more money on the line in those games.

Therefore, if you can beat these games at an elite winrate, you might be able to make a full time income (depending on your circumstances of course).

As I have discussed several times on this blog, I spend most of my time grinding online in low cost of living tropical destinations.

Good Poker Win Rate For Small Stakes

Therefore, I don't need nearly as much money to be a professional poker player as some people who choose to live in an expensive Western country like the one I am from, Canada.

I discuss all this in much more detail in my popular 10 years as a poker pro article.

What About Live Poker Win Rates?

What about if you play live poker in a casino though? Well, live poker win rates are not measured the same as online poker win rates. Live poker win rates are measured by how many big blinds you make per hour.

The consensus has long been that in the two lowest stakes games that most casinos spread ($1/$2 and $2/$5), the very best players can expect to make around 10bb per hour.

In terms of a live poker hourly that equates to:
  • $1/$2 - $20 an hour
  • $2/$5 - $50 an hour

Again, these are the live poker win rates and hourly rate for the very best live poker players in the world at these limits.

Good Win Rates for Small Stakes Poker

The Let Down

Alright, let's inject some reality back into this conversation now. The average win rate and daily earnings of a random person just getting started in online poker are both in fact negative numbers.

Many people get caught up in the spell of the dream poker lifestyle. They have seen the millions being tossed around on TV and they figure that since they dominate their buddies every Friday night or have been "killing it" at the local 1/2 game for an inconsequential amount of hands that online poker is going to be a piece of cake.

The vast majority of them find out the hard way that it doesn't quite work like that. Let me now list the win rates that are much more common for these stakes. Keep in mind that at least 3/4 of people who play poker actually lose in the long run.

So the numbers below represent the average win rate that a winning online poker player (only 1/4 of the player pool) can expect to attain at the various stakes.

Average Poker Win Rate For 1-8 Tables.

2NL win rate: 6bb/100

5NL win rate: 4bb/100

10NL win rate: 3bb/100

25NL win rate: 2bb/100

50NL win rate: 2bb/100

100NL win rate: 1bb/100

Average Poker Win Rates For 9-17 Tables.

2NL win rate: 4bb/100

5NL win rate: 3bb/100

10NL win rate: 2bb/100

25NL win rate: 1bb/100

50NL win rate: 1bb/100

100NL win rate: 1bb/100

Average Poker Win Rate For 18+ Tables.

2NL win rate: 2bb/100

5NL win rate: 1bb/100

10NL win rate: 1bb/100

25NL win rate: 0.5bb/100

50NL win rate: 0.5bb/100

100NL win rate: 0.5bb/100

You can pull out your calculator again and multiply these numbers by your projected daily volume and hourly volume in order to get your daily and hourly earnings.

I hope these numbers prove valuable to all of the financial planners out there who want to know exactly how much they are going to make before they even get started!

Unfortunately though, poker doesn't actually work this way.

You need to put in a lot of time and effort studying your game and improving it if you ever want to make the big money in poker.

Your time would be much better spent simply forgetting about all of your future riches for now and instead focusing on playing as much as you can and working hard on your game away from the tables.

Final Thoughts

So what is a good poker win rate these days?

Well, as you can probably see, this is very much open for debate. It depends on how many tables you play, how good you are, how much you table select and so on.

But what I do hope you see though is that it isn't easy these days and you have to really be willing to put in the work both on and off the tables if you want to achieve one of the very best poker win rates.

I would also recommend studying some advanced poker strategy if you really want to take your game to an elite level and start making huge profits from poker.

The two best options are:

Get $100 OFF Use Code: 100OFF

Because, if you are willing to put in the effort, then I can tell you that anything is possible in this game.

Look, I am not here to encourage all the dreamers though who keep sending me all these emails asking about how rich they are going to get playing poker.

These are the people who are often doomed to fail in poker because they are thinking about the game completely wrong.

All they can see is dollar signs when they should be worried about putting in work and getting better at poker instead!

I am here however to encourage all those realistic people out there who have the will and desire to improve their poker game and ultimately achieve these top results one day.

Poker isn't easy these days but there is always room at the top for those with the willingness and drive to truly make it happen.

Lastly, if you want to know the strategy that I personally use to make $2000+ per month as a 10 year pro, make sure you download a copy of my free poker cheat sheet.
