Why Some Think Online Poker is Rigged (Brutal Truth!)

Why Some People Think Online Poker is Rigged

This article was written by blackrain79.com contributor Fran Ferlan.

If you’ve played online poker for a while, you already know that frequent bad beats and suckouts are inevitable.

You’ve also quite likely encountered such horrendous plays from some players you just can’t believe a real live person would play that way.

What’s worst, it seems they keep getting rewarded for their mistakes, and you end up losing stack after stack, despite seemingly doing everything right.

This kind of all too common experience has led some players to believe online poker sites are somehow rigged for action.

While there is virtually no real evidence to back these claims, it still doesn’t explain why so many people still believe that to be the case.

This article will take a closer look at some common objections people have when it comes to the alleged rigged online games, and why your poker site (in all likelihood) is not out to get you.

1. Online Poker Has Far More Bad Beats And Suckouts Than Live Poker

One of the main arguments for online poker being rigged comes mostly from anecdotal evidence.

And in particular from some players who claim that the RNG (random number generator) in some (if not all) online poker sites isn't really random, but is somehow programmed to deal the cards to induce action.

In other words, poker sites have intentionally developed an algorithm designed to compel players to put money into the pot in order to make more money from the rake.

The argument for this claim is the allegedly disproportionate number of the so-called "setups" or coolers, (i.e. the spots where you have a very strong hand, but your opponent ends up having an even stronger hand) in online poker as opposed to live poker in a brick-and-mortar casino.

Some players go so far to claim that sites are deliberately designed to reward recreational players' mistakes because of frequent suckouts they endure when playing poker online!

For example, the spots where you put your money in with the best hand, only to be outdrawn by a weaker hand on the future streets (aka a "bad beat").

By the way, if you just want to learn my simple no BS system for exactly what hands to play, when to bet, raise and bluff, I cover this in extensive detail in my brand new training program, Play Fearless Poker.

Bad Beat Example Hand

You raise AA, bad player calls.

Flop comes: 853

You bet, they call

Turn comes: J

You bet, they call

River comes: 2

You bet, they raise, you call

Bad player flips over 5♠2♠ and you lose!!

I think we have all had this sort of thing happen to us before. And it is very frustrating, without a doubt.

Maddening in fact. Why the hell were they even in the hand?!?

But this is of course what bad players do, they play bad.

And they almost always have some small chance to hit a miracle river card (which will of course happen sometimes).

Anyways, the argument goes that poker sites make the most money from recreational players and depend on their deposits, so they artificially hedge their bets in order to keep them playing longer.

Others will even claim some poker sites are infested with bots, because they can’t believe a real life person would make such horrendous mistakes and end up being rewarded for it.

For example, a player calls you down with a fourth pair, only to spike a set on the river and take your whole stack. It must be the bot that somehow knows which river cards are going to be dealt beforehand.

In reality, however, the insane number of bad beats, coolers and suckouts has nothing to do with the rigger RNG, but the lightning fast speed of online poker as opposed to live poker.

While you’ll be lucky to be dealt about 30 hands an hour playing live poker, you can get dealt a hundred or more hands an hour in online poker.

If you get dealt three times as many hands, you’re going to suffer three times as many bad beats. It’s simple math, not a conspiracy.

And that’s only if you play one table.

If you play multiple tables online, something you can’t do when playing live, you will multiply the number of possible bad beats with the number of tables you’re playing.

Five tables equals five times more bad beats. What’s more, these bad beats can happen in quick succession, sometimes one right after another.

And some of these situations are really mind-boggling, and it’s hard to believe something like that is even statistically feasible.

When that happens, it’s natural to get overwhelmed and frustrated. It’s hard to think logically in these situations, and it can really feel like someone is out to get you.

There’s hardly any other logical explanation as to why you’re running so terribly.

If you want to know how to prevent bad beats (is it even possible?) I have already written an entire article on that.

2. Some Poker Players Have a Hard Time Dealing With Randomness

Still, there is another logical explanation why horrendous situations happen in online poker, and you might not like it. It’s called the negativity bias.

In psychology, it’s the notion that experiences you perceive as negative have a greater psychological effect on your wellbeing than the positive experiences of the same intensity.

In other words, bad things produce more negative emotions than good things produce positive emotions. In poker terms, losing money hurts more than winning money feels good.

It’s perfectly understandable, and hardly a surprise.

When things are going well, you can only feel so good, but if things are going bad, they can always get even worse, and you can die.

You probably won’t die playing poker, but you can still lose a lot of money, and that’s also pretty bad.

By the way, if you literally feel like you "can't win at poker" I recommend checking out one of Nathan's latest videos on this.

The point is, we humans are naturally hardwired to respond more strongly to what we perceive as negative experiences, and losing money definitely constitutes as one.

We also like explanations as to why certain things happen.

We are pattern-seeking creatures, and when someone tells us that things happen because they are random, our brain is none too happy with that explanation.

It doesn’t understand randomness. It doesn’t accept it.

Telling it that things happened because someone designed them to happen that way is psychologically much more feasible than saying that they are just random.

Hence the rigged RNG in online poker. The greedy poker sites intentionally rig the algorithm to squeeze out every last penny out of their unsuspecting customers.

Many people are totally convinced for example that PokerStars is rigged and I have already done a deep dive debunking a few of the myths about this.

3. Online Poker Sites Have No Reason To Rig The Games

Now, to give credit where credit is due, some online poker sites can certainly have shady business practices, and some are even outright scams.

The stories about poker bots, superusers, collusions are not unheard of, and certainly exist.

Wherever there is money to be made, there will always be a fringe minority of people willing to defraud other people for the prospect of an easy buck. It’s nothing new. Scams and scammers exist in every industry, not just poker.

However, these are individual cases, and they are very few and far between. It’s not an industry-wide conspiracy by any means.

That’s because there’s really no reason for the poker sites to rig their games. The gambling industry is already a multi-billion dollar enterprise, and online poker sites have the near-perfect business model.

They already rake in millions of dollars of revenue every year, and have very few expenses to cut into their profit margins.

Unlike a brick-and-mortar casino, they don’t need to spend any money on a physical location, equipment, staff wages, security and so on.

Once they develop the software, all they have to pay for is the site maintenance, customer support, marketing etc. This is a vast oversimplification, of course, but you get the picture.

The point is, once the poker site is up and running, it basically makes money itself. The games run themselves, with little to no effort, and the money keeps rolling in.

If a poker site has an approved gambling licence, and passed all the hurdles on the way to establish itself on the market, why on earth would it risk facing a financial and reputational ruin by deliberately rigging the games?

Just to make a few bucks more?

Well, maybe, but remember, they’re already making bank. Once you earn a ridiculous amount of money, you reach the point of diminishing returns.

If you’re dirt-poor and someone gave you a thousand bucks, you’d be thrilled. But if you’re a multi-millionaire, a thousand dollars more or less means close to nothing to you.

It makes zero logical sense for a company to risk its licence and reputation by rigging the games. The upside of slightly increasing their revenue doesn’t even remotely justify the risk.

Besides, somehow making an algorithm designed to induce action is so overly convoluted effort that ultimately just isn’t worth the hassle.

4. It’s Easier To Assume The Game is Rigged Than to Admit You Suck

It’s also curious that you always hear about the poker site being rigged from bad poker players.

Somehow, the winning poker players don’t complain about the rigged RNG, regardless of the number of bad beats they encounter.

This is probably because they already know the proven winning poker strategy that will yield them positive long term results.

So they don't have to stress over every single bad beat like the weaker players do.

The good players understand if they do suffer a bad beat, it means they put their money in with a mathematical advantage, and that’s the best you can hope to do when playing poker.

If that advantage doesn’t come to fruition at a particular time, so be it.

In the long run, they know they will win far more than they lose, and they’ll continue playing to the best of their abilities.

Bad players, on the other hand, will be quick to recognize the spots where they got the short end of the stick, but they will also be painfully unaware of their own mistakes, and how they contributed to their bad results.

Why Some People Think Online Poker is Rigged

In poker, the cards you’re dealt are only a part of the equation. How you play them is just as important, if not more so.

It’s also important to be aware of the fact how variance affects your short-term results.

If you get a full house and your opponent flips over quads, it’s infuriating as hell, but if you play poker long enough, these situations will happen, albeit infrequently.

It’s the nature of the game, and it has nothing to do with the rigged RNG.

In order to achieve long term success in poker, knowing which cards to play in which position is just part of the equation.

Having a slight technical skill edge over your competition isn’t enough to crush the game beyond belief.

You also need to know what it is exactly that makes you more skilled than your opponents, and how to best exploit it in a given situation, even when the cards aren’t falling your way.

By the way, I discuss this in much more detail in my new Elite Poker University training.

If you can recognize deficiencies in your opponent’s game, you should extend the same courtesy to your game as well. You don’t have it all figured out, because nobody ever does.

Finally, you need to come to terms with the fact that superior poker skill just isn’t enough, and the luck element of poker will play a role in your day-to-day result.

The skill of recognizing and dealing with variance, both good and bad, is also a skill, and it’s just as important as technical game knowledge.

If you sometimes get the feeling the site is rigged against you in the heat of the moment, it’s perfectly understandable, because it can certainly feel that way from time to time.

But if that thought pattern becomes pervasive enough, it can become a problem.

Luckily there are more ways that ever today to quickly improve your poker game such as advanced poker training programs and poker strategy books that give you the step by step formula to start winning now.

Why People Think Online Poker is Rigged (Final Thoughts)

In conclusion, online poker is not rigged, and there isn't any real evidence to back this claim apart from anecdotal evidence from some players who aren’t exactly experts on the topic, to say the least.

Now, that’s not to say that there aren’t any poker scams online at all, because there certainly are.

There are a number of scammy poker sites, but even in these cases, the frauds have more to do with the inability to withdraw money, operating without a gambling licence and so on, and don’t have anything to do with the rigged RNG.

That’s because it’s far easier to make a legitimate random number generator than a convoluted algorithm that somehow induces action. It’s even more ludicrous to make such an algorithm for low stakes poker games.

The monetary incentive to do so simply does not outweigh the risk, and if someone is deliberately out to defraud people, there are far cheaper, less risky, and less convoluted ways to do so.

As to the question of why some people still believe online poker is rigged, the simplest answer would be ego protection. To err is human, but to blame someone else is even more human.

It’s easier to assume that someone is out to get you, than to take a long hard look at where your skills may be lacking and realize how you’re complicit in your own bad results.

Between the industry-wide conspiracy and our own wilful blindness and ignorance, which one is more likely? Occam’s razor would suggest the latter.

Why Some People Think Online Poker is Rigged

Is Online Poker Rigged? - Here Are the Facts [2025]

Is online poker rigged?
People often ask me if online poker is rigged or not.

And my answer is always the same: if it is rigged, then it is definitely rigged for me. Because I have made a lot of money playing this silly little card game on the internet!

In all seriousness though, this is big concern that many people have. In fact my recent "Is PokerStars Rigged" post has quickly become one of the most popular articles I have ever published.

So here's the short of it:

Online poker on the whole is not rigged. The financial incentives for the poker sites to maintain the integrity of their games are just too important. However, there are some legitimate concerns about some of the smaller poker sites in particular. The bottom line though is that you are the customer and you hold all the power. If you think a certain poker site is rigged, then you should withdraw all your funds and absolutely refuse to play there.

However, this is a fairly simplistic answer. So let's dig into specifics in the case for and against online poker being rigged. I will also talk about issues like bots, collusion and superusers.

Alright, let's go!

Is Online Poker Rigged? What's the Deal!

So let's get right into it. Is online poker rigged or not? What the heck is the deal here? Why do I get so many bad beats?!

When people talk about online poker being rigged the most common complaints I hear are a mathematically improbable amount of "setups" (example: AA vs KK) and bad beats (example: you have AA, bad player with 74 offsuit hits two pair on the river).

Here is a good example of a so called setup hand:

But anyone who has played poker longer than a few days, knows that eventually these always go both ways. They are simply a part of the game, so it's like complaining about the rain.

People also often talk about a "big stack advantage" in poker tournaments as well. This means that they believe the poker site rigs it in order for the bigger stack to win more all-in preflop coinflips (example: AK vs 99).

The logic behind what exactly the poker sites gain by rigging these hands and allowing the big stack to win more flips is a little bit less clear.

Especially since most of the people who complain that online poker is rigged play incredibly low stakes, like $10 games.

By the way, if you want to learn how I created some of the highest results of all time in low stakes games like this, I cover it in extensive detail in my BlackRain79 Elite Poker University.

Some people however even claim that there is widespread collusion, bots or "superusers" in many games.

Is there any truth to this?

Now this is a bit of a separate issue because this sort of cheating (if true) is more likely to be perpetrated by the players themselves, not the poker sites.

However, let's put that to the side for a moment and discuss the case for and against online poker being rigged first.

The Case For Online Poker Being Rigged

So let's look at the facts for why online poker is rigged then shall we?

Well, unfortunately the facts for online poker being rigged are few and far between. The arguments in favor of online poker being rigged would be much better classified as "anecdotal" instead.

For instance, if you go read any "poker is rigged" thread on Reddit or a poker forum you will find that most of the comments are actually just angry, incoherent and expletive laced rants.

And they are always missing that one massively important pesky little detail:

Evidence.

Instead their arguments usually go something like this instead:

"OMGGGZZZ, my pocket AA got cracked 3 times in a row, on the RIVER, every time STUPID JOKERSTARS, rigged, I will get my lawyer and sue POKERSTARS!!!, OMFG so mad right now, how can anyone play on this RIGGED poker site???"

Now, the problem with "arguments" for online poker being rigged like this is that while they certainly demonstrate a large amount of emotion, they just aren't supported with anything close to what we would typically deem as evidence.

And unfortunately, when making such seriously allegations and threatening lawsuits against a multi-billion dollar company you are probably going to need some of this!

The main problem here is that "my pocket AA got cracked 3 times in a row" just doesn't mean anything. Like at all.

In fact this is such a completely commonplace and mathematically likely occurrence in poker that it is trivial to even consider as I discuss in this video:

You would need a sample size of thousands of instances where your AA was getting beat too often in order to have a real and substantive argument here.

And luckily for all of those who believe that online poker is rigged, this is actually really, really easy for them to do.

You can just use a program like PokerTracker, import your poker hands, and then filter for all instances of AA to see your winning percentage.

Pocket Aces should win approximately 85% of the time versus a random hand.

is online poker rigged?

So, if you had a sample size with thousands of instances of AA where you are only winning at 70%, 60% or less, then you would have a real and legitimate complaint!

However, I have never seen anyone who claims that online poker is rigged actually produce a statistically significant sample size like this. Instead they have sample sizes of 3 hands, 10 hands or 100 hands.

Incredibly small sample sizes like this would be quickly refuted by any amateur mathematician as well within the bounds of simple variance and standard deviation.

And for all those threatening lawsuits against the online poker sites this sort of "evidence" would also be quickly dismissed from any court of law as pure silliness.

The Case Against Online Poker Being Rigged

The evidence for online poker not being rigged is far, far stronger. And the reason why is because once again, you can just go check it for yourself!

Most poker sites these days will allow you to download your hand histories as you play. Hand histories are a small text document which includes every bit of information about a poker hand.

For Example:
  • Exact time the hand was played
  • All player's stack sizes
  • Who bet, folded, called etc.
  • Who was the winner of the hand
  • Who was the loser of the hand

And as mentioned before, we have highly sophisticated online poker tracking programs these days like PokerTracker and Hold’em Manager.

Using the pocket AA example again, you could simply go into either of these programs and filter for this hand only. Then you could see if your winning percentage differs dramatically from where it should be.

Furthermore, it wouldn’t even take that many hands to figure this out. In order to get a sample size of 1000 instances of pocket AA for instance, you would only need to play 220,000 hands of poker.

You get dealt pocket AA 1 out of every 220 hands. 220 x 1000 = 220,000.

Now this might sound like a lot, but for anyone who plays online poker seriously and multi-tables this is not really that many hands. Any serious poker player could easily do this in a couple months.

In fact, I have actually played this amount of poker hands in one single month several times throughout my poker career.

By the way if you are curious about how I play this many hands of poker, and still keep track of all my opponents, yes I do use several poker software aids and tools.

For the complete list of all poker software and tools I use as a pro at the tables, click here.

However, my suspicion is that many of the people complaining about their pocket AA being cracked too much have not even played this many hands in their entire lifetime!

After all, it is hard to play a lot of poker when you are too busy writing angry expletive laced comments on Reddit and threatening hare-brained lawsuits.

Look, if you truly believe that your pocket AA is losing way too often then you owe it to yourself to at least do your homework first so that you know for sure.

Play a statistically significant sample of hands (i.e. 200K+), run it through a tracking program, and then post the evidence for all the world to see!

Opinions are great. Everybody has one. But what we need in order to solve the debate once and for all about online poker being rigged or not are facts. Clear verifiable evidence.

Not a bunch of bad beat stories.

Unfortunately for all the people claiming that online poker is rigged, they never seem to have much of this.

However, I know that I can look through my own database of millions of poker hands and prove them dead wrong in a second.

Another thing that would help a lot of the people who believe online poker is rigged is to simply get better at poker.

Because when you have an extremely high win-rate you won't worry about the routine ups and downs as much anymore.

This is something that Daniel Negreanu actually mentions specifically in his brand new advanced poker training course. Instead of worrying so much about the losses, just focus on winning more!

Poker Sites Have a Direct Financial Incentive NOT to Rig Online Poker

The other big problem for the online poker is rigged crowd is that the poker sites actually have a direct financial incentive to maintain the integrity of their games.

In other words, they have a clear motive NOT to rig online poker.

PokerStars for instance made $877 million dollars in revenue from poker in 2017. And that is actually a 4% increase over 2016 for all the people who think the popularity of online poker is trending downward.

What these numbers really prove though is the point that I have been making on this blog for many, many years now.

And That Is:

The poker sites themselves are the real big winners in poker and they always will be. They are the real "sharks," not the players.

If you disagree please tell me the name of a poker player who is making nearly a billion dollars a year. I would pay anything to get coaching from this guy!

So simple common sense and logic will tell us that when you are already crushing it beyond belief in business the last thing you want to do is change anything or risk your reputation.

No of course not. You just want to keep the gravy train rolling!

You really have to ask yourself what PokerStars for example has to gain by rigging the river in your $10 tournament. Nothing. But they have everything to lose.

You Are The Customer, You Have All the Power!

But hey believe me, I get it. Some people will never be convinced no matter what I or others say.

Even though there is absolutely no evidence to support their claims nor even a motive for many of the poker sites to rig anything, their minds are already made up.

And that's completely cool.

You can believe pink monkeys orbit the moon too and Tupac Shakur is alive and well living on an island in Malaysia with Jim Morrison.

At the end of the day though it doesn't matter what I believe or what you believe because the bottom line when you are playing poker (online or live) is that you are the customer.

And therefore, you have all the power.

So if you believe that a certain poker site is rigged against you then you should vote with your feet and simply withdraw all your funds and never play there again.

Something that I can never understand is how many people complain that a certain poker site is rigged (let’s just use PokerStars as an example again) and yet they continue to play there!

Why on earth would you continue to play at a poker site that you are convinced is rigged? This defies all logic and even just common sense.

There are literally hundreds of other online poker sites to choose from. And if you are convinced that all of online poker is rigged against you then you can just go play live as well!

Also, remember that when you withdraw your funds and go play somewhere else this is a huge loss for that poker site. They rely on the rake that you pay to keep creating those multi-million dollar profits.

So if you are convinced that an online poker site is rigged, hit them where it hurts, in the pocket book. Withdraw your money and never play there again.

What About Poker Bots, Collusion and SuperUsers?

Alright, let’s get into the much more serious discussion now of poker bots, collusion and superusers.

This is a legitimate concern because unlike poker sites rigging the river against your pocket aces, there is actually real evidence that this sort of cheating has occurred.

But the difference here is that the cheating is almost always done by the players themselves.

They are often the ones who are trying to run poker bots, collude with other people at the the table or find out somebody's hole cards (superuser).

In the past several years there have been allegations of bots in particular being used on nearly every major online poker site.

poker bots online poker rigged

And this isn't just speculation. There have been many high profile cases of poker sites publicly refunding players because their security teams uncovered gross rule violations.

Now while they rarely spell out the exact details of what type of actual cheating occurred (for pretty obvious reasons) it is clearly some sort of bot ring or collusion in many cases.

Now should you be concerned about playing against poker bots, colluders and so on? Absolutely. But here's the thing. You are battling against human nature here.

Whenever there are significant amounts of money on the line, a small amount of people are going to engage in shady practices or even outright cheating.

Remember that little global financial meltdown we had about 10 ago? Ya, enough said.

Look here's the thing. There is always going to be some form of cheating or angle shooting in poker no matter what games you play in. And it doesn't matter if you play live or online.

Does this mean that you should never play poker again? No of course not. You just need to be realistic and vigilant when playing poker.

I would also be a lot more concerned as a mid or high stakes poker player about this sort of cheating because of the much larger amounts of money in play.

However, less than 5% of the people reading this article right now actually play in these games. I know this because I asked 1,124 of you what stakes you play a few months ago!

But look here is the bottom line once again. You are the customer. If you feel that something isn't right, then send the poker site an email, and give them some specific names and details so they can investigate.

If you do not find their reply to be satisfactory, then withdraw all of your funds immediately and never play there again.

Final Thoughts

So should you trust online poker? Is online poker rigged?

Well, I think the glaring lack of any real evidence or even a motive for most of the major online poker sites to be rigging anything speaks volumes.

But as we all know some people will never be convinced.

I get hands sent to me every single day like this one where people are convinced that it is 100% rigged against them:

However, it is much easier to just say that something is rigged against you rather than to address the real core problem: Not understanding basic fundamental poker strategy.

After having coached 100's of low stakes students before in the past, this is the real issue in my experience working with other poker players.

But since there is tons of high quality advanced poker training programs available these days to help you improve, this really shouldn't even be an issue anymore.

As for the much more serious and realistic issue of poker bots, colluding and superusers I think there is a reason to have some level of concern about this.

You should be vigilant about any poker games you are playing in and don't be afraid to report any suspicious behavior either.

All major online poker sites have a security team dedicated to maintaining the integrity of their games. It is their job to investigate your concerns!

But as I have said again and again throughout this article, at the end of the day you don't have to listen to me or anyone else. You are the customer and you hold all the power.

If you think there is something amiss with a certain online poker site (for any reason whatsoever) then my advice is to immediately withdraw all your funds and never play there again.

Lastly, if you want to know how to consistently make $2000+ per month playing low stakes poker, make sure you grab a copy of my free poker cheat sheet.

Is PokerStars Rigged? Here Are the Facts [2025]

Is PokerStars Rigged?
People still ask me all the time if PokerStars is rigged. Or if online poker in general is rigged.

And I have never written an article about it before because I think this just legitimizes what to me seems like a pretty ridiculous question.

But here is the quick answer.

PokerStars is not rigged. It just appears that way sometimes due to the incredible speed of online poker. Because online poker sites like PokerStars typically deal hands 3 times faster than a live poker game, you should expect 3 times as many bad beats. This is even more pronounced in Zoom Poker which can deal hands up to 10 times as fast as a live poker game.

Is PokerStars Legit? Is it Rigged?

But believe me I get it, some people are still not convinced that PokerStars is legit and not rigged.

I even have a free cheat sheet which literally shows you exactly how to win on PokerStars (including what hands to play!), but they still complain it's rigged.

You can get my free cheat sheet right here by the way.

And I know that the emails and the comments I get almost every single day about online poker being rigged won't stop.

Anyways, my hope is that this article will help solve the Great Debate once and for all!

Is online poker rigged? Are we being invaded by Russian bots? Are there mysterious ninjas hired to create another rigged river card just for you right before the final table?

I gotta be honest. I can't possibly answer all of these earth shattering questions in a tiny little blog post like this.

However, a little bit of common sense should tell us that of course there is some nefarious behaviour going on when anything important (such as money) is on the line.

Humans rig the stock market, they rig elections, they lie on their resumes and they cheat on their high school exams as well. Heck a decent chunk of them even end up cheating on the person that they swore their wedding vows to!

So in short, yes of course there are certain poker sites and individuals out there who are trying to rig the system in their favor when it comes to online poker. You would have to be incredibly naive not to realize this.

But is PokerStars legit? Is there widespread cheating going on across the entire industry, and specifically at the biggest online poker site in the world, PokerStars?

Probably not. Here are 5 reasons why.

1. PokerStars is a Money Making Machine

The first and most highly obvious reason why PokerStars is probably not rigged is because they are an absolute money making machine.

As I have said many times before on this blog the house is always by far the biggest winner in poker. And PokerStars takes this to an entirely new level.

They are estimated to be bringing in $500 million dollars in pure profit each year. And therefore god only knows how much they were hauling in 5-10 years ago when poker was really booming.

And I personally have made a lot of money on PokerStars as well over the years by using a few proven winning poker strategies.

By the way, if you just want to learn my simple no BS system for exactly what hands to play, when to bet, raise and bluff, I cover this all in my brand new training program, Play Fearless Poker.

Memorize the charts. Stop guessing. Start winning.

I also just made a new YouTube video showing you exactly what hands to play (simply memorize the charts!)

Never miss my new poker videos, join 150,000+ who are already subscribed.

As a 10+ year pro, having played most of my hands on PokerStars, I have had a lot of success over the years.

In fact, I literally started with just $60 on PokerStars many years ago and have built my entire professional poker career upon that small initial amount.

Never having to reload even once.

And yes, I started at the very bottom on PokerStars in the 1c/2c game building my way up the stakes progressively.

So this just goes to show that you can win big on PokerStars by using the right poker strategy, which I show you exactly how to do in my free poker cheat sheet.

Back to the discussion at hand here though...

$500 million dollars!

Common sense should once again beg the question:

Why on earth would PokerStars possibly want to screw that up? Why would you do anything that could potentially risk your huge $500 million dollar per year cash cow?

When you are already making absurd amounts of money and dominating the entire industry what possible incentive could you have to want to rig something?

PokerStars is one of the most successful and profitable poker sites the industry has ever seen. Nobody has been able to rival their dominance for over a decade now.

And no matter what you think of their new ownership, they continue to crush it in every possible way from a business point of view.

So there is simply no plausible motive here.

In fact they have every reason in the world NOT to rig it and just keep playing a winning hand over and over again.

2. You Can Simply Go Check it For Yourself

The second most important reason why PokerStars is probably not rigged is kind of a biggie as well. And that is that you can actually just go and check it for yourself!

PokerStars is one of the few poker sites out there who are very open about what they do. They will in fact actually send you every single hand history that you have ever played on their site.

I know this because I did it myself once. I requested close to 8 million hands that I had played on PokerStars from them. Within 24 hours I had the links to download them all.

This means that I could then go stick those 8 million hands in a tracking program like PokerTracker and run extensive analysis and tests looking for statistical anomalies.

This is one of the biggest reasons why I am not a big fan of a recent trend in online poker towards anonymous poker sites and/or those who do not provide hand histories.

"Open source" poker sites like PokerStars are much better for the industry in my opinion because they allow us to essentially police the games for ourselves.

Any legit online poker site like PokerStars is not going to hide anything from you. All the hand histories are available for you to see for yourself.

3. There is No Actual Evidence that PokerStars is Rigged

So given the fact that we can actually run our own tests and search for statical anomalies over massive sample sizes you would think that all the people who are so certain that PokerStars is rigged would have overwhelming evidence to support their claims.

Nope, nada, none.

There has never been one conclusive study that I have ever seen, based on a statistically relevant sample size, which actually proves that there is any rigging going on at PokerStars.

Their standard arguments instead usually go something like this:

"OMG...My AA got cracked 3 times in a row by some stupid fish!!!...I told you JOKERSTARS is rigged, rigged rigged!!!"

The main problem with these "arguments" is that they fail to account for even the most basic variance in poker and they are completely lacking in a statistically significant sample size.

A sample size of 3 hands is completely meaningless in poker. And so is a sample size of 300 hands, 3,000 hands or even 30,000 hands.

This is why most advanced poker training programs these days focus exclusively on long term results based on solid decision making at the poker tables in the short run.

To put it quite simply, you need to be working with millions and millions of hands in order to get to the point where you can mathematically rule out variance.

Anyone who has actually played this many hands of poker knows exactly what I mean by this.

I have never seen a real legit study based on this many hands which conclusively proves that there are widespread statistical anomalies going on with the RNG on PokerStars.

Because if such a study like this actually did exist, believe me you would have heard about it by now. And it would be an absolute bombshell within the poker industry.

Most of these people who think PokerStars is rigged would do better to simply focus on increasing their poker winnings instead, rather than worrying so much about all their bad beats.

For example, it would be a better idea to simply use a good free poker HUD. This way you can quickly get reads on all the bad players and increase your profits rapidly.

4. Human Bias and Defence Mechanism

The next reason why some people are convinced that online poker is rigged is because most people lose at this game.

And that unfortunate little reality isn't likely to change any time soon.

You could just watch my free poker course on YouTube and start winning quickly.

Now, sure.

There are ways to make $50 or $500 or even $5000 a day on average in poker.

But on most days your results will be all over the place, both positive and negative. Hopefully more positive days than negative days, which is the entire goal.

But unfortunately, once the poker sites and the winning poker players take their cut there just isn't much left over for everybody else.

In fact I would estimate (conservatively) that 70% of poker players lose over the long run, which is honestly just insane.

By the way, I discuss this in much more detail in my new Elite Poker University training.

And the other thing that we know about poker players is that virtually all of them think they are pretty good, or at least above average. Poker is kind of like driving, nobody will ever admit they are bad at it.

So this naturally leads to a situation where many losing poker players will look to either repress this reality or simply shift the blame to something else for their lack of success.

In fact, Sigmund Freud (the father of modern psychology), even created a name for this very common unconscious process. He called it a defence mechanism.

When you aren't winning at poker the easy solution is just to blame it all on your bad luck or convince yourself that the whole game is rigged against you.

This is an absolutely crucial reason why poker continues to be so profitable.

So, losing poker players have an easy out. They can just continually convince themselves that their lack of success is due to some outside force beyond their control.

And therefore, they never even think to address the real reason why they keep losing, which is their own lack of skill and lack of tilt control among other things.

There is no other game on earth that I have ever seen that inspires such incredible levels of self delusion. And quite frankly, it is an absolutely beautiful thing.

5. Variance and the Speed of Online Poker

The final reason why some people swear that online poker is rigged is because they don't realize how the speed of the online game changes everything.

Daniel Negreanu actually touches on this specifically in his new poker strategy course.

A lot of the people who claim that online poker is rigged come from a live poker background. Or they have played a statistically insignificant amount of hands online (less than 100k).

Therefore, they simply do not understand that the speed of online dealing (often 3 times as fast as a live game), coupled with the ability to multi-table, means that bad beats and coolers are simply bound to happen far more often than what they are used to.

This doesn't mean that anything is actually rigged. It just means that you are now experiencing the acceleration of a Ferrari instead of your old Toyota.

Yes it is going to feel weird at first. It won't even seem believable at times in fact. This is why many people do not feel that PokerStars is legit.

And if you try your hand at something like Zoom Poker (which deals hands upwards of 10 times as fast as a live poker game), it might just blow your mind completely!

Is PokerStars Rigged?

You really have to understand that online poker is a completely different experience from live poker. Yes it is the same game with the same rules, but all of the similarities end there.

The speed at which the online version of the game is dealt means that you are going to get to the long run far quicker than you are used to. This also means that you will see the true depths of statistical variance much more vividly.

And when you add in the ability to multi-table into the mix as well, you better buckle up. Because it is going to be downright crazy and quite simply not believable at times.

By the way if your are curious how I am able to play 20+ tables of online poker and still keep track of all my opponents, yes I do use several poker software tools and aids.

For the complete list of all the poker software and tools that I use as a pro, click here.

Should You Use the New PokerStars All-In Cashout Feature?

I do also want to mention that PokerStars recently added an All-in Cash Out feature that people ask me about now all the time.

Basically, this feature allows you to "cashout" your equity in the hand when all the money goes into the middle, instead of just letting the cards fall as they may (and potentially taking a bad beat).

As far as I know the Pokerstars all-in cashout feature is only available at the lowest stakes (NL2, NL5 and NL10) and only on regular tables (i.e. not Zoom).

Now do I personally use this feature? No.

I honestly think it is pretty silly. However, I do think it is a very smart "gimmick" feature by PokerStars though.

Because now all the people who write them angry emails every day claiming it's all rigged against them can just "cashout" their equity and avoid taking a dreaded bad beat.

For me though, this isn't poker and this isn't how winning players think about the game in my experience. I don't play poker for the results of individual hands or day to day results.

I instead play poker for the long term (months and years) and focus on my results over hundreds of thousands of hands. This is how I have been able to create a career out of this game.

Therefore, since I know that my equity is going to be realized over the long term, I can stop focusing on short term results, like so many amateurs do, and just focus instead on consistently making good poker decisions.

However, for all those people who take it very personally every time they receive a bad beat in poker, this new All-in Cashout feature might be an option for you to consider when playing on PokerStars.

How I Became the Biggest Winner of All-Time on PokerStars (Micro Stakes)

The debate about online poker being rigged or not will rage on no matter what I say here.

And I know a few people will probably even accuse me of being a "shill" for PokerStars after writing this article.

The most hilarious part about that is anyone who actually reads my poker blog regularly knows that I have been actively recommending that you DO NOT play at PokerStars for many, many years now!

And that is not because I think there is any rigging going on at PokerStars or that PokerStars is not legit.

It is simply because there are many far easier online poker sites (softer games) available these days to play at in my opinion.

But hopefully some of the points discussed in this article will help bring some sanity back to the discussion. Obviously online poker faces many challenges and the integrity of the games will always be questioned as well.

Humans like to cheat at stuff after all. The sky is blue as well!

But the idea that there is any widespread rigging going on at PokerStars in particular is pretty absurd in my opinion.

I have made a lot of money on PokerStars over the years as a 10+ year poker pro by simply using a solid fundamental tight and aggressive strategy and focusing heavily on my tilt control.

This is in fact why I originally wrote what is now the best selling poker strategy book of all-time for low stakes PokerStars games, Crushing the Microstakes.

Is pokerstars rigged?

And then I also included hours and hours of optional videos with the book of me personally playing Zoom, 6max and full ring on PokerStars.

Is PokerStars rigged?

I have made tens of thousands of dollars in these low stakes games (some of the highest in PokerStars history), and I wanted to show people exactly how I did it with a video series.

I also wanted to prove once and for all that you can absolutely crush these games when you use the right poker strategy and focus on your tilt control.

However, I can't lie.

After playing millions and millions of hands on PokerStars, I have also taken an enormous amount of bad beats over the years. So much so, that it seemed completely unbelievable at times.

And there have been many times when I felt like just giving up completely. Throwing in the towel and quitting.

But I realized that this is the time when you find out what you are really made of as a poker player. When you can't win a hand to save your life for weeks or even months on end.

This is when you separate yourself from all the other amateurs out there. This is when you get to prove that you are a professional.

And this really is the critical point.

Winning at poker over the long run is really hard. It takes an unbelievable amount of work ethic, discipline, self control and patience.

Is PokerStars Rigged?
Me multi-tabling on PokerStars

And as a 10+ year poker pro I can tell you that the vast majority of people who play this game are simply not willing to put in this level of dedication and work.

After all, it is so much easier to shift the blame onto somebody or something else than to actually put in the hard work every single day both at the poker tables and away from them improving your game.

Look guys, if being a big winner in poker was easy, then everybody would be doing it. The bottom line is that you will get exactly what you put into this game.

You can keep choosing to believe that it is all rigged against you like most people do, or you can choose to finally address the real root causes for your lack of success in poker.

Having coached 100+ people myself to finally start winning big on PokerStars, I can tell you that the #1 reason most people don't win is because they are bad at poker.

I found that many people *think* they are good at poker, but in reality they do not really understand how to play a fundamentally sound tight and aggressive poker strategy.

This is something that Phil Ivey even discusses in his new advanced poker training program.

And he has won $20,000,000 playing online poker. Enough said!

They also typically suffer from an appalling lack of discipline and tilt control in most cases, both of which are absolutely vital components of any winning poker strategy.

To put it bluntly, it is only when you finally decide to start approaching this game like a professional that you will start creating the real consistent profits you have always dreamed about on Pokerstars.

In any case, I wish you all the best at the poker tables no matter what your poker goals are. Thank you for reading.
