12 Advanced Online Poker Tips Used By Pros [2024]

Advanced Online Poker Tips

People often ask me what are my best online poker tips these days.

As somebody who has played online poker for 10+ years as a pro, this is a topic I wanted to finally cover in detail here on my blog.

So here are my 12 best online poker tips used by pros:

1. Learn to crush the micro stakes first
2. Always enter the pot with a raise
3. Don't be afraid to re-raise a lot preflop
4. Don't call 3-bets out of position very often
5. Respect the power of the 4-bet
6. Move up stakes when you have 30 buy-ins
7. Don't bluff the fish (seriously, just don't)
8. Force the weak regulars to fold by barreling scare cards
9. Never miss a value bet versus the fish
10. Respect turn and river re-raises
11. Be prepared for endless bad beats
12. Learn to laugh it off more and simply have fun!

However, I want to dig much deeper into each of these.

So in this article I am going to provide you with my top 12 advanced online poker tips that are used by the pros.

Let's jump right into it!

1. Learn to Beat the Micro Stakes First

Now I must admit, my first online poker tip for you is not always the most popular one. And that is to start at the micro stakes.

What does the "micro stakes" even mean though?

When I use the term micro stakes in online poker I am basically referring to the 1cent / 2cent blind games (2NL) all the way up until the 25cent / 50cent blind games (50NL).

Now some online poker sites these days start at 2cent / 5cent blind games or even 5cent / 10cent blind games. My advice though is to always start at the lowest stake available.

And to find out EXACTLY what hands you should play at these stakes, check my new video below: 9 PREFLOP Poker Tips For Beginners (Just Do This!)

Never miss my new poker videos, join 100,000+ who are already subscribed.

Now I know everybody wants to play high stakes and make the big money but if you are new to online poker or struggling to win so far, it is really necessary that you learn to smash the bad players at the lower limits first.

And the reason why is because this is going to force you to master the fundamentals, which will help you tremendously when dealing with the much stronger competition that you will face in higher stakes poker games.

Even if you are a very experienced poker player (perhaps with a lengthy live background), I still recommending starting out at the micro stakes for a week or two just to prove that you can easily beat these players.

Please believe me when I say that online poker is no walk in the park anymore at mid stakes or high stakes. By this I mean stakes of like 100NL (50c / $1 blind games) and higher.

It is really important to prove that you can beat the lower stakes first or you will not stand a chance in these higher stakes games.

2. Always Enter the Pot With a Raise Preflop

Another one of my best online poker tips is to always enter the pot preflop with a raise.

Now I know this might sound a bit crazy at first especially if you come from a live poker background where limping (just calling the blind preflop) is a lot more common.

But in online poker limping is much less prevalent. And quite frankly, if you do limp a lot, then it is likely that one of the stronger players will start isolating you frequently and making your life difficult after the flop.

Here is a perfect example of a why I do not suggest limping very often in online poker:

As you can see, it creates a bad situation that I like to call "the snowball effect."

It is almost always a better idea when you are playing online poker to simply take control of the pot right away before the flop with a raise.

I recommend raising it 3x the big blind. And you should also add one extra big blind for each limper. Furthermore, you also want to add an additional big blind, per limper, if you are out of position.

For those of you who have read Crushing the Microstakes you will know that this is the exact preflop raising system that I outlined in the book.

Now I know this can all be a bit confusing for newcomers to poker though so let me explain all this with a few examples:

Example #1 (standard raise):

It is folded to you on the button with AJ♣ in an NL10 Zoom 6max cash game.

You should raise it to 30 cents.

Example #2 (raise over limpers in position):

Two people limp and you are on the button with AJ in a NL10 Zoom 6max cash game.

You should raise it to 50 cents.

Example #3 (raise over limpers out of position):

Two people limp and you are in the big blind with AJ in a NL10 Zoom 6max cash game.

You should raise it to 70 cents.

The reason why it is better to consistently take control of the pot preflop like this (instead of just limping along), is because it gives you many more ways to win the pot.

You have the exact same odds of winning the pot by simply making the best hand after the flop. But by raising preflop you have also given yourself two additional ways to win the pot.

You can now also win the pot by simply forcing them to all fold preflop. Or you can win the pot by continuing with the pressure and forcing them to fold on the flop, turn or river.

Guys, one of the biggest key principles of winning poker is giving yourself the maximum amount of ways to win the pot.

By consistently being the aggressor in the hand preflop you almost always give yourself more ways to win.

3. You Should Often Re-Raise Preflop as Well

Another one of my best online poker tips is to re-raise often before the flop as well. This is also referred to as a "3-bet" by the way.

The reason why you want to be re-raising preflop a fair bit is for similar reasons. It simply gives us more ways to win the pot.

We can take it down preflop, we can make the best hand postflop or we can force them out of the pot after the flop by continuing with the aggression (more betting or raising).

Now, you don't want to go crazy with 3-betting in low stakes games because you will get called quite a bit. But when you have a strong premium hand like:
  • AA
  • KK
  • QQ
  • JJ
  • AK

Then you should be re-raising preflop very often.

The only real exception is when a tight player raises in early position because they will be on a very narrow range of extremely strong hands.

By the way these are the seats directly to the left of the blinds.

Best online poker tips

When a player (who is already tight) raises from these seats we should expect them to have a very strong range. Maybe as narrow as 88, 99, TT, JJ, QQ, KK, AA, AQ and AK.

So therefore it can often make sense to simply flat call to control the size of the pot with a premium hand like TT, JJ, QQ or AK.

And if we are nutted with AA or KK, it can also make sense to just flat call here in order to keep them in the pot. We also get to play our hand in position in both scenarios (huge advantage).

However, in literally all other cases you should simply be 3-betting (re-raising) when you have one of these premium hands.

You also want to be doing some "light 3-betting" as well though. This means that you are choosing to re-raise with some speculative hands.

This makes you much harder to play against overall.

And once again, position matters a lot here. You primarily want to be light 3-betting when the action is around the button or it is blind versus blind.

Make sure that you do not light 3-bet somebody who raises from early position for all the reasons that we just discussed.

Here are a few of the hands I like to light 3-bet with:
  • A9♣
  • 66♠
  • JT

You also want to be keenly aware of the player type though. The best kind of player to target with a light 3-bet is a weak player.

This means they are very hesitant to play a big pot without a big hand. This is where using a HUD can really come in handy when playing online poker.

Just target people who have a Fold to 3-bet stat of 70% or higher.

But even if you are not using a HUD, you should be paying close attention to the table and be able to quickly identify who the weaker players are.

4. Don't Call 3-bets Out of Position

Another very important online poker tip that I have for you is to avoid calling too many 3-bets preflop when you are out of position.

By the way, when I use the term "out of position" (OOP), I am referring to a situation where you will have to act first on all three streets postflop (flop turn and river).

Many people make the mistake of calling a re-raise preflop when they will have to act first after the flop on every street. This is a severe disadvantage in poker.

Once again, you need only check your PokerTracker database to see just how much more you are winning when you are in position versus out of position.

This is a cardinal rule of poker that can never be overcome. And it doesn't matter how "good" you think you are. Position is everything in poker.

This is something I discuss in my new 12 advanced online poker tips video.

So even though it might seem weak, often you will want to simply fold your 2nd tier hands versus a 3-bet preflop when you are OOP.

Here are a few examples of 2nd tier hands (good but not quite premium):
  • AJ♠
  • KQ♠
  • 55♣

You should still continue with all of your premium hands versus a 3-bet when you are out of position (i.e. AA, KK, QQ, JJ, TT and AK), sometimes by re-raising them right back again.

But with most of your 2nd tier type hands, a fold right then and there will often be more profitable over the long run.

By the way, for much more on when to call preflop 3-bets and when to 4-bet them right back, this is something that I discuss in much more detail in my best selling poker book, Modern Small Stakes.

5. Respect the Power of the Preflop 4-bet

The next online poker tip that I have for you is to respect the power of the preflop 4-bet especially at the lower limits. A "4-bet" by the way is when there is a raise, a re-raise and then another re-raise.

The reason why you need to be careful when somebody 4-bets you, especially at the micro stakes, is because most players will only do it with AA, KK and sometimes QQ or AK.

So in other words, extremely, insanely, strong hands.

A lot of people make the mistake of calling a preflop 4-bet though in order to "see a flop." This is a major mistake though.

Because the problem here is that with 100 big blind starting stacks, a preflop 4-bet is usually requires you to put close to 25% of your stack in the middle before seeing the flop.

Therefore, you cannot profitably call a preflop 4-bet with a 2nd tier hand like:
  • AQ
  • 77

And the reason why is because you simply will not connect with the flop often enough to make up for putting in such a large percentage of your stack before the flop.

And furthermore, with a hand like AQ this is especially dangerous.

This is because even if you manage to hit your Ace or Queen, you could wind up getting yourself in a reverse implied odds situation where they have you dominated with a hand like AA, QQ or AK!

So your "reward" for hitting the flop will be to lose all your money. This is why it is so vitally important to respect the power of a preflop 4-bet at the micros.

Your best bet will often be to simply fold, whether you are in position or out of position, unless you have an extremely strong premium hand yourself.

By the way, I discuss this in much more detail in my new Elite Poker University training.

6. Move Up When You Have 30 Buy-ins For the Next Stake

The next online poker tip I have for you is to move up to the next limit when you have 30 buy-ins. A "buy-in" by the way is 100 big blinds for the stake you are currently playing.

I always recommend having a bare minimum of 30 buy-ins for any poker cash game you are playing and 100 buy-ins at a bare minimum for tournaments.

So for example, let's say you started in the 1c/2c (2NL) cash games with $60. This is exactly 30 buy-ins for this game because a buy-in is $2.

Well, once you build up your bankroll to $150 you should start playing the next limit which is 2c/5c (5NL) because this is 30 buy-ins for that game.

Online Poker Tips from the pros

And then once you build up your bankroll to $300, you should move up to the 10NL game. And so on and so forth all the way up the stakes.

By the way, I have recently written complete guides on how to beat all 3 of these games:

I would suggest bookmarking each one of these articles and then studying them each time you move up the stakes.

Now I should mention that you also need to move down if you are not successful at your new limit at first and fall below 30 buy-ins.

Just drop back down a bit, grind it back and try again. It is completely normal to "fail" sometimes when you move up. It happens all the time even to professionals like me.

You should never take it personally. Often you just ran bad over a small sample. It is important to just take your lumps, move back down for a bit, and then try again.

This is how winners view moving up the stakes.

The bottom line is by following this bankroll game-plan you will be able to slowly but steadily climb up the ladder in online poker all the way to the high stakes games.

7. Don't Bluff Very Often Versus the Fish

This next online poker tip is very important.

If you want to have success in the lower stakes games in particular, then it is really important that you keep the bluffing to a minimum (especially versus the fish).

And the reason why is because the lower stakes are often full of players who like to call too much. So you can already probably guess why bluffing too much will be a disaster against players like this!

The best way to beat a table full of "calling stations" like this is to simply value bet the crap out of them. This basically means that you are only betting when you have the best hand right now or a good draw.

So for example:
  • Flush
  • Straight
  • Trips
  • Two pair
  • Top pair
  • Middle pair
  • A monster draw (e.g. pair + flush)
  • A good draw (e.g. flush or straight)

In other words, something strong that is likely to be the best hand pretty often or has large amounts of equity in the case of a draw.

And this means that when you have anything weaker than this such as bottom pair, an inside straight draw, ace high or nothing at all, then you should be checking and giving up most of the time at the micro stakes.

I would also suggest that you should never slow-play your really big hands like a full house, flush or a straight in these low stakes games.

Why?

Because once again calling stations love to call! Daniel Negreanu actually talks about this at length in his new poker training course.

So the bottom line is stop trying to bluff the bad players if you want to beat the lower stakes. And stop trying to get tricky and slow-play versus them as well.

Both of these strategies will absolutely destroy your win-rate at these limits.

8. Barrel the Scare Cards Versus Tight Players

Now even though I just mentioned that you shouldn't bluff too much in low stakes online poker games, there is actually one key exception.

And this is when you are playing against what I like to call the "weak/tight" regulars.

You will find the weak/tighties at all levels of the micro stakes in today's online poker cash games or tournaments. You will find these guys in live games as well.

Basically these players are sitting around waiting for the nuts and they are scared to put significant amounts of money into the pot unless they have a very strong hand.

If you are using a HUD, then they will have HUD stats like:
  • 18/15/2 in 6max (VPIP / PFR / AF)
  • 12/9/2 in Full Ring (VPIP / PFR / AF)

You also want to look for a low WTSD% (went to showdown) of somewhere in the mid to low 20's. The lower the better.

Because it means they are afraid they to go to showdown without a very strong hand. As you can imagine, these are the type of players who I absolutely love to bluff against!

Online poker tips bluffing

So when I am up against a player like this I will often use "scare cards" on the turn or river to bluff them out of the pot. This is because I know they are unlikely to call.

A scare card by the way is usually a high broadway card like an Ace or a King which is likely going to be very bad for your opponent's range.

Example Hand:

You raise 55 from early position in an NL10 Zoom 6-max game

A weak/tight regular calls you on the button.

The flop comes:

742

You make a continuation bet (C-Bet).

He calls.

The turn comes:

A

What should you do?

This is a clear spot where you should be betting again even though you are technically "bluffing" here.

The reason why is because given the action so far (weak/tight player just calls preflop and then just calls on this low flop), they will often will have a hand like:
  • TT
  • 99
  • 88

In other words, these are all hands that absolutely hate to see that Ace on the turn.

And since we also know that this is also the type of player who is afraid to put a lot of money in the pot without a strong hand (low WTSD%), this is the perfect scare card for us to fire again on and make him lay down a better hand.

We should also note that the A on the turn also gives us an inside straight draw to the wheel. So we still have outs even if they do decide to call us.

Lastly, it is important for me to mention that this is an advanced online poker tip that you only want to use against a very specific player type (the weak/tights).

You never want to double barrel a scare card like this versus the recreational players and calling stations. Because they of course, will just call you down!

If you want to learn how to use advanced poker strategies like this in much more detail (versus all player types), check out my latest poker strategy book, The Micro Stakes Playbook.

For example, flip to page 148 of the book (chapter 9) and you will find several more detailed examples of how to use scare cards, and equity cards as well, to make them fold.

9. Get Your Value Bets in Versus the Fish

The next online poker tip is also one of the most important on this list. And that is making sure you are getting your value bets in versus the fish.

What is a "value bet?" A value bet is any time you make a bet with a hand that is likely to be ahead right now.

As we already talked about, there are lots of recreational players (and even some regulars) who like to call too much at these stakes.

I have personally coached over 100 students at the micro stakes in the past. And if I had to name one of the biggest reasons why many of them struggle to win, it is because they do not get enough value bets in versus these kinds of players.

Many people choose to slow-play instead because they saw their favorite poker player on TV like Phil Ivey do this against some other high stakes professional poker player.

But you have to understand that the strategy required to beat your $10 games on the internet has almost nothing in common with the strategy required to beat nose bleed high stakes poker games versus world class pros.

In fact, Phil Ivey even talks about this in his new advanced poker training program.

And he's won over $50,000,000 playing poker. Enough said!

As I mentioned before, in the low stakes online poker games that you play in, slow-playing is almost always a bad strategy because most players love to call.

So it is absolutely crucial that you are making value bets every time you have the chance with your huge hands like a full house all the way down to marginal hands like middle pair.

Example #1

You raise from the button with AK and a fish calls you in the big blind.

The flop comes:

AK4

The fish checks.

You should bet! (do not slow-play here).

Example #2

You raise from the button with JT and a fish calls you in the big blind.

The flop comes:

AT3

The fish checks.

You should bet! (your hand is likely the best, you need to get value).

Always get your value bets in versus the recreational players whether you have a monster hand like a straight, two pair or just middle pair.

Do not be afraid of "scaring them out of the pot." This is a huge mistake in thinking that many people make. Yes, sometimes they are going to fold when they have nothing.

That's poker. It's how the game works sometime.

But if these players have any piece of the board they will call. You need to give them the opportunity to make this mistake against you.

Also, make sure your value bet sizes are on the larger side versus recreational players. I almost always go at least 60% of the pot, and often more.

10. Respect Turn and River Re-Raises

My next online poker tip is also something that I have found many poker beginners struggle with. And sadly, it holds so many of them back from winning.

As I mention in Crushing the Microstakes:
  • Turn raises at the micros are almost always the nuts
  • River raises at the micros are always the nuts

In case you don't know by the way, "the nuts" is poker slang for the best hand possible.

From my 10+ million hands of experience playing micro stakes poker online you can literally take these two statements to the bank. Because they are true almost all the time, versus all player types.

One thing that you have to understand about most low stakes poker players, whether they are recreational players or regular players, is that most of them are passive.

They like to limp along and call with all sorts of hands. This is the "friendly" style of poker that they learned playing with their friends in home games or saw in Hollywood movies.

So when they decide to stick in a big raise on the turn or river (which is often going to represent a significant portion of their stack), they are very rarely messing around with you.

They mean business!

This is a point that a lot of low stakes players struggle to comprehend and they often end up paying a heavy price for it.

For example:

You raise from early position with AA in a 5NL Zoom full ring cash game.

A weak/tight regular calls you on the button.

The flop comes:

467

You make a continuation bet.

The weak/tight regular calls.

The turn comes:

9

You bet again.

The weak/tight regular raises.

This is a spot where you absolutely need to be folding your over-pair.

I know it probably sounds crazy right? How can we fold pocket Aces here? It is such a strong hand! The pocket rockets, c'mon!

But what you have to understand here is that when a weak/tight regular in particular raises you on the turn like this he is basically screaming from the mountaintops that he can beat a one pair hand.

And of course a one pair hand is exactly what we have with pocket AA here. In fact, most of the time this kind of player is going to show up with exactly one of these hands (which are all sets):
  • 44
  • 66
  • 77
  • 99

And that ultimately means that there are only two remaining cards in the deck on the river that can allow us to win the hand (A and A)

Not good.

I don't think I even need to show you some charts to tell you how bad our odds are mathematically in a situation like this. It's bad, we are drawing extremely thin.

Always remember at the lower stakes that turn raises are usually the nuts. And river raises are pretty much always the nuts.

Believe me, if you can learn to start folding your one pair hands in these situations even some of the time, it will end up saving you a fortune.

11. Be Prepared For Bad Beats in Online Poker

My next online poker tip is probably the #1 reason why people do not win at online poker. And this is because they are not prepared for the amount of bad beats they will receive.

What you have to understand about online poker is that a regular online poker table deals 3 times faster than a live poker table in a casino and an online Zoom game deals 10 times faster.

This essentially means that you should expect to get between 3 and 10 times as many bad beats than what you are currently used to when you play online poker.

And that is just with one online poker table. When you then throw multi-tabling into the mix, it only gets even crazier!

Online poker tips bad beats

Many people are simply not ready for this and they go on monkey tilt and throw away their entire bankroll when it happens.

All you have to do is go read my recent "Is PokerStars Rigged?" post to see the evidence of this. Read some of the 100+ absolutely crazy comments this article has received so far.

You will see first hand just how many people are simply not ready to handle the ups and downs of online poker. They get way too emotionally invested in every single bad beat.

It is very important that you learn to view your progress in online poker from the perspective of months and years, not weeks or days.

Because your results over the course of individual days and weeks will simply be all over the place. Even world class professionals routinely lose over the course of days or weeks in online poker.

Due to the speed of online poker you will receive an unbelievable amount of bad beats, coolers and "setups."

You need to be prepared for this or you will simply tilt all your profits away like so many others before you have.

12. My Ultimate Online Poker Tip - Just Have Fun!

And this leads into my final online poker tip which is simply to have fun!

Look, we all started playing poker in the first place because of the excitement and the thrill of potentially winning big.

The fact that anybody can sit down to play poker, even with famous pros, and run up a small amount of money very fast. There is literally nothing else like it on earth.

Whether you play cash games, tournaments, no limit hold'em, pot limit omaha or triple draw 2-7 lowball, we all play this game to chase the big score and to grind out a steady profit over the long run.

Now the problem of course is that yes, you are going to have many, many losing days along the way. And there is simply no way around this.

Poker is a game with a large short term luck element built right into it. This is what makes it so exciting and it is what keeps bringing the bad players back again and again.

No other game is like this. Think about a beginner chess player who gets smashed 10 times in a row by a much stronger player.

He is just going to quit right? He will simply have to accept the fact that he is not skilled enough to beat this player yet.

The bad poker player though will blame all his losses on "bad luck" instead. And then he will suckout and win a big pot versus a good player and this will prove all his delusional thinking right!

It's absolutely brilliant when you think about it.

12 Advanced Online Poker Tips Used By Pros

This is why people like me can make an entire career out of this game, travel the world non-stop and basically it can change the course of your life completely.

But that is only going to happen if you can learn to start seeing beyond the short term. You have to simply learn to start laughing it off some more.

You have to see the comedy in this game sometimes and view it with a lighter heart. So the fish laid a bad beat on you once again right before the final table?

But you got it in with the best hand right? Let the fish have his day. It's all good. The math will sort it all out in the long run.

Trust me, this is the only way you are going to survive in this game over the long term. Always remember why you started playing poker in the first place.

You need to have a short memory to succeed in poker. The beats, the coolers and the suckouts will be endless. There is no point in obsessing over every single one.

Just continue to play better than them and remember to always keep improving. And then you will have the last laugh in the end, when it actually matters.

Final Thoughts

So there you have my top 12 online poker tips!

But to be honest, winning at online poker consistently is really just about consistently applying the basics day in and day out.

Sure, once you move up the stakes a bit you can enroll in an advanced poker training program and learn some higher level stuff.

But in order to win consistently at the micro stakes all you really need is a good tight and aggressive strategy both before the flop and after the flop.

You should also be bluffing the scare cards versus the weak/tight regulars, value betting widely versus the fish, and respecting turn and river re-raises.

I would also recommend moving up the stakes each time you hit 30 buy-ins for the next limit. But also moving down as well if things don't work out for your at first.

And above all, the best piece of wisdom that I can give you from my 10+ years playing online poker, is that you have to be ready for all the crazy ups and downs you will face.

If you get too emotional about every bad beat or river suckout you face, then you are never going to be successful with online poker.

Learn to laugh it off more. The math will take care of them in the end.

Lastly, if you want to know how to consistently make $1000+ per month in low stakes poker games, make sure you grab a copy of my free poker cheat sheet.

  1. I especially like the advice about laughing it off. This morning these two hands happened within 3 minutes on two different tables at 888 poker. And really the way, these two guys played, is just so bad, that why not laugh about it? As you say, math will take care of them in the long run. And we WANT guys like this to be in the game and continue massively overplaying their hands, so no point in getting angry about it, when they get lucky.

I did actually laugh about it, and this is somewhat related to the point about bankroll management. I am currently deeply overrolled for 10NL, so a few bad beats like this does not really hurt my bankroll. However if I only had 30 buyins, they would have cost me 10 % of my bankroll in 3 minutes (the difference between actual and expected C).

That is kind of brutal, o if you playing 5-10NL with a somewhat small bankroll, there is something to be said for playing on Stars and using their new cash out option. I know, many pros dont like it, but it does take some of the wild swings out of the game.

  5. If you see more bad beats online because of the speed, shouldnt you also see more hands that play out like theyre supposed to? When I play 3 hands AQ or better, AA KK AQ all lose to the same donkey seat with 7-10-6-4 and Q9 sorry just dont experience that on live tables.
Hands like this, AQ guy on my right raises A3 I know I have him beat, I call, 6-4 suited calls and flop comes A-6-4....A3 goes all in, I call expecting chip leader to fold but no look at that he's flopped yet ANOTHER MONSTER.
    Get serious man.
KK he flops a straight with 7-10 and AA he hits Q two outer on turn.
    NO.
When that shit does happen to me inside maybe a 30-40 hand delivery, in a live game, Ill be back to eat my words.
