How to Win at Poker Every Time (It Might Surprise You)

How Do You Win at Poker Every Time?

People often ask me how do you win at poker every time? Now, unfortunately my answer might disappoint you a bit.

Because, well, you can't.

However, there are several strategies that you can use to make sure you win at poker more often. I am going to explain them all for you in this article.

1. Why Can't You Win at Poker Every Time?

First off, why can't you win at poker every time?

Well, this is simple. There are two ways to win a poker hand. You either show the best hand or you bluff your opponents out of the pot.

But in some cases there is no way that you can do either.

For Example (No Limit Texas Hold'em):

You have 72
Your opponent has AA

The flop comes: AK9

There is no way that you can win this pot by showing the best hand. You are actually drawing dead on the flop.

In other words, it does not matter what cards come on the turn and river, you have an exactly 0% chance of making the best hand!

And secondly, when your opponent has such a strong hand here with a set of Aces, there is pretty much no chance on earth that you are going to be able to bluff them out of the pot.

Therefore, this is one of those clear situations where the best option you have is simply to fold and cut your losses.

In other words, there is no possible way for you to win this hand.

2. How Can You Improve Your Chances of Winning at Poker Every Time?

Ok, so if we can't win at poker every time, then how can we improve our chances of winning more poker hands?

Again, this is pretty easy. Start playing better poker hands.

So for example, in the hand above it would be a much better idea to simply fold a garbage holding like 72 preflop. Because, extremely weak hands like this have very poor equity against a strong hand like AA.

By the way, if you want to know what the top 10 best poker starting hands are, click here.

So one of the best things that you can possibly do to improve your chances of winning at poker is to simply start with a stronger hand than your opponents do.

This means that you should enter the pot preflop with hands like:
  • AK, AQ, AJ, AT
  • AA, KK, QQ, JJ, TT
  • 99, 88, 77, 66, 55, 44, 33, 22
  • KQ, QJ, JTs, T9s, 98s, 87s

And maybe a few other good hands. The "s" stands for suited only by the way. Both cards are the same suit (example: both cards are hearts).

If you consistently only play strong poker hands like this, then you are going to improve your chances of winning significantly.

3. Learn to Play in Position More

The next thing you want to do in order to improve your chances of winning at poker more often is to learn how to play in position more often.

What I mean by this is that you need to start playing more of your hands on the button or in the seats directly to the right of it.

There is an old saying in poker that "all the money flows towards the button" and it is absolutely true. You will win the majority of your money in this seat and the seats directly to the right of it.

And this is because you get to act last after the flop, turn and river.

Having this ability to see what they do before you have to decide is an absolutely enormous advantage in poker. It allows you to have a much better idea of when to bet, raise and fold.

On the other hand, when you are playing out of position (acting first), you basically have to just guess about what your opponent is going to do.

So one of the best things you can do to improve your chances of winning at poker more often is to play a bigger percentage of your hands in position.

Daniel Negreanu does a great job of showing you how to play more of your hands in position in his new poker training program.

4. Learn to Bluff Them Out of the Pot

So, we can only make so many good hands in poker. Everybody gets dealt pocket AA roughly around the same amount of the time over the long run and so on.

Therefore, if we want to win at poker more often then we will need to learn how to bluff them out of the pot more often.

Now the problem with this strategy is that if you currently play at the lower limits like most people do, most of your opponents probably don't like to fold very much!

This is especially the case if you play live poker in a game like $1/$2 for example. By the way check out my complete guide to beating live $1/$2 poker games right here.

So you need to learn how to pick your spots well.

One of the best ways to do this is to double barrel on the right turn cards. By the way, "double barrel" means to raise preflop, bet the flop and then bet the turn again.

And the cards that you want to bet again on the turn are specifically:
  • Ace
  • King

Anytime an Ace or a King comes up on the turn you should bet again whether you hit that card or not.

And the reason why is because this is what we call a "scare card" in poker. Your opponent probably won't like this card and they might get scared and fold.

For Example:

You have 55 and you raise on the button in a 1c/2c Zoom 6-max cash game online

A tight player calls you in the big blind

The flop comes: 24T

Your opponent checks

You bet

He calls

The turn comes: A

Your opponent checks

You should bet!

The reason why you should bet again on the turn here is because there is a good chance that your opponent will be afraid of this card.

When he calls us on the flop, he will often have a hand like:
  • 99, 88, 77, 66
  • KT, QT, JT

Now what do all of these hands have in common?

Yup, you guessed it. All of these hands absolutely HATE to see this Ace on the turn. And the only thing they hate to see more is another bet out of you on this card!

Also, it is important to realize that we even picked up a few extra outs because we can hit a straight now on the river with a 3.

So this is an excellent spot to make another bet and bluff them out of the pot. This is how you will start winning at poker a lot more often.

Check out my best selling poker strategy book Crushing the Microstakes (and the video series) for much more on how to bluff them out of the pot like this.

I have literally made a career out of making people fold the best hand in spots like this :)

Final Thoughts

So is it possible to win at poker every time?

Well, honestly no it isn't. Sometimes you simply have a bad hand and there is no way that you can win the pot by bluffing either because they have something really good.

There are going to be many times in poker where the most "profitable" play is ironically to just give up and fold your hand.

However, by playing better hands before the flop, understanding how to use position better and bluffing them out of the pot in the right situations, you can definitely learn to win at poker more often.
